Southeastern Community College music and drama students will present the second leg of a two-weekend run of the musical “Rent” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Grand Theatre in Keokuk.
Last weekend, SCC students from the Keokuk and West Burlington campuses gave three performances at the Capitol Theater in Burlington.
This is the first time the campuses have collaborated on a show.
“It’s been great to have students from both campuses share the stage,” said vocal music instructor Leigh Pirtle. “There’s a lot of energy when we get together. From a practical perspective, we’ve been able to add more depth to the cast and take better advantage of our resources by joining forces.”
By focusing on a single production, the students have been able to take the show on the road and perform in two different venues, according to drama instructor Jodi Cook.
“We knew we would need to pick something that could be easily transportable,” Cook said. “‘Rent’ fit the bill perfectly. The sets are minimal and have an industrial feel and so the focus is really on the performers.”
“Rent,” a rock opera written by Jonathan Larson, is set in New York City and is loosely based on Puccini’s “La Boheme.” It follows the lives of a group of Bohemian friends who struggle with life and loss.
The cast includes Alex Kempker, Joe Russell, Charlie Hayner, Nathaniel Simonson, Kayla Beriou, Jeigh Christophe, Audra Phillips, Kady Dewey, Daniel Arbogast, Amanda Brooks, Grace Buerklin, Davis Carberry, Craig Carter, Whitney Christophe, Chelsey Ferguson, Loren Harrison, Mayon Messner, Christine Milder, Spencer Perron, Kaylee Renteria-Lewis and Sheldon Rooney.
Band members are Dakota McWhortor, guitar; Ron Sadler, drums; Chuck Richards, bass; and Pirtle, keyboard.
Tickets are $12 for floor seating and $6 for balcony seating, and are available at the door. They also can be purchased from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Fred Karre Memorial Library on SCC’s Keokuk campus, 335 Messenger Road.
“Rent” contains mature content. Parental guidance is suggested.
