Montrose gets 'Confabulous' with new store

Wilma Smith is hoping to build on the success of other Montrose businesses by opening one of her own.
On Monday, the Montrose native will open "Confabulations" at 610 Main St. in Montrose, a quality consignment store that will also tailor to customers' custom sewing, mending and alteration needs.
"Years ago when my oldest daughter was in school, I did a lot of sewing," Smith said. "Over the years, a lot of friends have stopped by after work and asked me to alter clothes or sew on buttons for them. I also made some of my children's clothes and did some of my own."
The consignment shop just seemed to be a natural fit with today's economy, Smith said.
"Today's economy is bad, and there is a need for quality clothes," Smith said. "I don't want to price things high. That annoys me when I go into other consignment shops."
But her consignment business will not be limited to clothes. Although her existing shop is cozy, Smith said that she will accept most reasonable items.
"I will accept anything that's reasonable that I have room for," Smith said. "I know a woman in Missouri that makes jewelry. I hope to contact her and get some of her items in."
Additionally, Smith will also offer off-season clothing.
"You go into most stores off-season and you can never find anything," Smith said. "We will have summer clothes in the wintertime and winter clothes in the summertime."
Smith said that she wanted to start the store a year ago, but ran into delays.
"We bought the place last year planning this," Smith said. "But since my son got called up to serve in the military the project got put on hold."
Additionally, Smith said, a clothing shop is the last piece of the economic puzzle for Montrose.
"With all of the restaurants in town and the meat market drawing people in," Smith said, "a clothing shop is the last thing Montrose needs. Now people can do all of their shopping in town."
Smith said that she doesn't have any big plans for her store in the future. The only changes she said that she might consider making would be to her hours of operation.
"I'm hoping that if the idea goes over well we can put in more hours," Smith said. "I would like to see the store flourish, so I don't have to worry about maintaining another job."
Smith said that her store hours will be from Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. And for "a few hours on Saturday." Smith also said that during the first week, customers can register for door prizes.
