Ballerina to polish skills in North Carolina this summer

DONNELLSON - A Donnellson girl will have the chance to pursue her dreams this summer as she enrolls in the 2006 summer session at the North Carolina School of the Arts.
Stefani Keller, a freshman at Central Lee High School and the daughter of Gary and Kristi Keller, will study ballet at the school this summer. The school offers a five-week residential program for intensive study in the discipline of the student's choice. Faculty will vary, from professional artists from around the globe to some of the school's regular teachers and special guest artists.
Keller has been dancing since she was 3. She has studied and performed many different types of dance, including jazz, tap and combination, but said ballet is what she likes the most.
The young dancer traveled with her family to the school in early April to attend an audition to be accepted into the summer class. She said the instructor at the audition said she saw a passion and desire to do well in ballet, but she needed some technique work. The good news is she'll get some help, as the instructor recommended her for the program.
Keller's mom, Kristi, said her daughter is getting a late start at the ballet school, considering that many begin in junior high. Keller could have the opportunity to go to high school there, but that is something Keller would like to take her time deciding.
“So far, I'd like to go to summer school and see what it has to offer,” Keller said.
“It's pretty far away,” Kristi added.
Kristi said she thinks her daughter will have fun, even though the schedule is going to leave her little free time. Along with several ballet classes, Keller will take a few classes that focus on other styles of dance.
Kristi liked the looks of the school and the activities that were going on during their visit.
“To see all the different arts- people singing, the orchestra playing, it was like living in ‘High School Musical,'” Kristi said.
Keller is as good at academics as she is at ballet. She has been named a United States National Award Winner in Science and Mathematics, an achievement that less than 10 percent of high school students earn. She was nominated by Alicia Schiller and Diane Wilson, teachers at Central Lee.
Other awards include being named an All-American Scholar. Students can obtain this award by earning a 3.3 GPA. She was nominated for the award by Chuck Good, counselor at Central Lee. She also will appear in the All-American Scholar yearbook.
She also has been named an All-American Scholar At-Large winner in both science and math, Who's Who Among American High School Students for 2005/2006 and is on the spring 2006 National Honor Roll.
Keller said the other students she met at the audition were nice to her. Some even helped her out when she needed some ballet slippers instead of the toe shoes she brought.
Her family will take a few days to drive her down to North Carolina, where she has to start classes on June 25.
“I'm excited,” she said.
