Rollin' on the River to spice up local riverfront

Blues lovers have 2 1/2 weeks to locate their lawn chairs, gather up friends and meet at the riverfront for two nights of hot music.

The 18th annual Rollin' on the River Blues Fest is Aug. 18-19 on an outdoor stage below the Keokuk-Hamilton Bridge at Victory Park, Keokuk. The lonely sound of passing trains, slap of waves against occasional passing barges and muted rumbling traffic on the bridge above add to the free-flowing ambiance of the event.

Advance tickets are $20 for both nights and may be purchased at Hy-Vee in Keokuk and Fort Madison; Keasling's Pharmacy and Gifts and Meister's Music, Keokuk; Weird Harold's, Burlington; Thurman Music, Fort Madison; and Smith Music and Vegas Music, Quincy, Ill.

Tickets at the gate are $12 each night.

On Friday, Aug. 18, free tent entertainment begins at 5 p.m. with Joe Price, a solo country blues singer from Lansing who was inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in 2002.

Stage entertainment begins at 7 p.m., with bluesman William Elliott Whitmore, a Montrose native who will be previewing his third CD, “Songs of the Blackbird.”

Up next is the rocking, local band, Dr. X, with legendary guitarist Slink Rand, a Hancock County, Ill., native. Dr. X will preheat the stage for the feature act, Popa Chubby.

Popa Chubby is known as “the big man of ‘New York City Blues.'” He fills the stage with his signature hot blend of jazz, pop, punk, hip-hop, funk and Southern rock.

On Saturday, Ron Teamer and Smokin' Guns, known as Kansas City's most authentic blues band, will take the stage at 6 p.m.

The next performers, the new supergroup Juke Joint Sinners, will spin out classic blues numbers. The bands members have previously been with some of the top Quad City groups.

Watermelon Slim takes the stage at 8:30 p.m. and introduces “the truck driving blues” to the mix of performances.

The Kinsey Report rolls up the house with the band's take on a hot sound built from the blues, reggae, soul and rock.

Vendors will provide food for all tastes at the Rollin' River Cafe opening approximately at 5 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. Chilled beverages of all kinds also will be in the tent.
