Around the Tri-State Area this weekend
The 18th annual Rollin' on the River blues festival kicks off tonight and continues Saturday at Victory Park along the Keokuk riverfront. Iowa native Joe Price will perform in the tent at 5 p.m. today.
The stage entertainment starting at 7 p.m. will include Lee County native William Elliott Whitmore, Dr. X featuring Slink Rand and Popa Chubby.
The free tent entertainment starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday will include a blues jam, Raeann School of Dance, children's entertainment and Chuck Mitchell. The stage entertainment at 6 p.m. will feature Ron Teamer & “Smokin' Guns,” Juke Joint Sinners, Watermelon Slim and The Kinsey Report. Advance tickets cost $20 for both nights. The cost at the gate is $12 per night. In Keokuk, tickets can purchased at Hy-Vee, Keasling's and Meister Music.
The first Art Over the Mississippi Invitational will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the railroad bridge observation deck in Keokuk in conjunction with Rollin' on the River. Jewelry, photography, woodcarving, prints, paintings and stained glass will be on display and for sale. The artists will include Leo Lemberger of Ottumwa, an award winning photographer and artist.
Non-alcoholic refreshments and light snacks will be available. Proceeds will benefit the new Cultural and Entertainment District. For more information, call Carole Betts at 524-4605.
Forty-seven teams from the Tri-State Area will compete in the third annual Hoopin' on the River three-on-three basketball tournament on four courts in Hubinger Landing in Keokuk from 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m. Saturday. Age divisions are K-second grade, third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth grade, seventh and eighth grade, ninth and 10th grade, and 11th and 12th grade. First-, second- and third-place and sportsmanship awards will be presented. Refreshments will be available. Part of the proceeds will go to the Keokuk High School girls basketball program. The Kahoka Bluegrass Festival continues at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Kahoka, Mo., today and Saturday. Twelve top bluegrass bands are performing. Tonight's schedule includes a fiddler's frolic with cloggers plus five bands in concert. Saturday's shows are scheduled at noon and 7 p.m. The show bands performing tonight and Saturday night include Gold Wing Express of Branson, Mo., Louisiana Grass, Gerald Evans and III Generations. The cost is $10 today and $12 on Saturday.
