Nancy Martin enjoys life in Keokuk

Published: Wednesday, November 8, 2006 1:12 PM CST
Nancy Martin of Keokuk is a retired school teacher.

She was born and raised in Julesburg, Colo. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln. She met her husband, John, at the University of Nebraska.

They moved to Keokuk in 1971 where they raised their children, Jeffery, Christopher and Jennifer. Their children are adults and married. Martin said she has three grandsons and three “lovely” places to visit.

“I retired from teaching after 29 rewarding years working with many talented administrators and teachers, not to mention many first grade students.”

She continued: “While visiting Japan we observed a group of pilgrims going up a mountain on a march. They were chanting as they marched, and when I asked what they were chanting, I was told they were saying, ‘I will do good, I will not do bad.' This made an impression on me, and when I got home, I decided I would like to be in a group of Christians marching up River Road singing ‘This Is The Day That The Lord Has Made, Let Us Rejoice And Be Glad In It.' So far I have got my friend Genny to join me, and if anyone would like to join us in a beautiful hike up River Road, they are welcome. This walk has been a real pleasure for me since I retired.”

Martin stays busy by volunteering her time in the community.

“Keokuk is filled with so many talented people who are willing to give of their time and talents,” she said. “I have been blessed in my retirement to work with many of these people in volunteer programs. I most recently worked with a great group of workers on the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary Tea and Bazaar, held Saturday at First Christian Church.”
