Several students from Hamilton Elementary School recently participated in a math-a-thon fund-raiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Carley Folluo, Caitlyn Nason, Brooke Horner, Shelby Syfert, Jed Schlicher, Ethan Summers, Alyson Prewett, Kolbie Schilson, Cassidy Dedey and Bradie Reed raised $619 for St. Jude. Reed collected the most donations with $233.
The students collected pledges for completed math problems and were able to win prizes.
Created in 1979, “Math-A-Thon,” a “fun math” program for kindergarten through ninth grade, has raised more than $285 million for St. Jude. Students improve their mathematical skills as they try to solve more than 200 math problems - all while obtaining pledges for St. Jude for each correct answer.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.
Thanks to the efforts of millions of donors from virtually every community across America, St. Jude has gone uninterrupted in its mission to find cures and save children. From an annual operating budget of $150,000 in 1962 to a daily operating cost of more than $1 million, St. Jude has managed, thus far, to stay in front of its researchers to do “more science, more quickly.”
