Keokuk Catholic School Principal Mike Ellerman of Augusta, Ill., resigned his administrative job effective Tuesday.
“He handed me his letter of resignation Monday afternoon,” said Dr. Dennis Wolter, president of the Keokuk Catholic School Board. The school board met last on Thursday.
Robert Clifton will serve as interim chief administrator of the Keokuk Catholic Schools, effective Friday, according to Wolter.
Clifton has more than 37 years of experience in administration, including two years with the Keokuk Catholic Schools.
“Parents and students can expect a smooth transition as Clifton is familiar with and has worked with our current faculty,” Wolter said.
There were no classes Monday, due to icy roads, but Wolter met Ellerman at the school.
“He did a good job while he was here,” said Wolter. “His letter says, ‘As you are aware, I was enrolled in the deacon program when I accepted the job as administrator at Keokuk Catholic Schools. I will be ordained as a deacon in the Springfield, Ill., diocese on June 24, 2007. It has required much effort.' His letter also mentions his parents and mother-in-law need more attention at this time. And he thanks the staff.”
Classes in the preK-8 grades school resumed Tuesday and students and staff alike were handed similar letters, telling of Ellerman's resignation.
“It was a surprise to me,” said music teacher Linda Tracy. “We didn't get to say good-bye or thank-you or anything. I would have liked to say good-bye.”
Wolter said students were given letters to take home Tuesday, telling of Ellerman's resignation.
“There were some things that led up to this,” he said. “In a few days I hope to have more to tell you.
Ellerman, hired in July 2005, served the Keokuk Catholic Schools during the last year (2005-06 school year) of high school students attending Cardinal Stritch and oversaw the move of preK-6 students from St. Vincent's School at Timea and South Seventh streets to the Stritch building on Plank Road, joining the seventh and eighth grade junior high students.
He has a bachelor's degree in education from Quincy University, a master's degree in reading from Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo., and educational administrative credentials from the University of Missouri.
He has previously taught grade school in Palmyra, Mo., reading in Quincy, Ill., at-risk students at Hamilton High School through Carl Sandburg College and has worked with the regional superintendent's office in Macomb, Ill.
Ellerman has taught at Southwest Baptist College and has taught teachers reading methods at Western Illinois University in Macomb.
Before taking the principal job at Cardinal Stritch High School, he served as principal in Southeastern Community School District 337 in Augusta after several years of also teaching there.
He was not available for comment prior to deadline.
