Presentation Thursday to highlight local foods marketing program

The Keokuk Garden Club will host a meeting at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Keokuk Library to share the latest accomplishments and future plans of the Buy Fresh, Buy Local Iowa Program with community.
Mallory Smith, statewide coordinator for Buy Fresh, Buy Local Iowa is the featured presenter.
A Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaign was established in Southeast Iowa in 2005.
The group distributes a free local food directory for the Great Rivers Region and promotes local foods events like the Lee County food tour and Local Food Mondays at the Drake in Burlington.
Administrative support for the group is provided by Geode Resource, Conservation and Development.
Local contact is the Lee County Economic Development Group.
Smith will also distribute the latest issue of the Edible Iowa River Valley which features Southeast Iowa.
Buy Fresh, Buy Local Iowa was developed as collaboration between Practical Farmers of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, FoodRoutes Network and other founding Buy Fresh, Buy Local states. The FoodRoutes Network, Kellogg Foundation, USDA and the Wallace Genetic Foundation provided financial support for development of the program in Iowa.
There are currently 23 states with active Buy Fresh, Buy Local efforts.
Nationwide Buy Fresh, Buy Local materials are easily recognized by the bright blue logo that resembles a fruit crate label.
Smith serves as statewide coordinator for Buy Fresh, Buy Local Iowa, a national program promoting local foods and sustainable agriculture. She has a bachelor's degree in home economics from the University of Iowa and a masters of business administration in community development from Western Illinois University, Macomb, Ill.
Her development experiences include two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras, a stint as a chamber of commerce president and setting up and running an economic development office in Louisa County.
Buy Fresh, Buy Local Iowa is part of a diverse roster of clients that Smith works with through her business, M Smith Agency. Smith resides in West Liberty with her husband and three sons.
