Shoppers crowded in with coupons and anticipation Thursday morning to the newest store at Keokuk's River City Mall.
Peebles, owned by the parent company of Stage, formerly at the same location, was staffed with familiar and news faces to welcome shoppers into the store.
Chris Cetta, manager of Keokuk's Stage, is now manager of Peebles.
“I worked for Stage previously and I'm seeing some of my familiar customers as well as new faces,” said Jill Bowers of Keokuk, working at Peebles. “We opened the doors at 9 a.m. this morning for customers.”
The first 100 customers received a free cookbook and coupons were handed out at the store entrance.
Employees worked in the store for 10 days before the opening, training, stocking and arranging displays. A team of eight from Peebles stores around Tennessee worked with employees during that time and stayed for the grand opening.
Vicki Fields, district manager from the Nashville, Tenn., area handed out coupons, answered questions and directed customers through the door.
“This is fun to be at an opening,” she said. “The people in Keokuk have been great.”
Two college students stood in the lines at the cash register with clothing purchases ready to be checked out.
Matt of Fort Madison and Justin of Kahoka, Mo., preferred their last names not be used.
“We cut classes to come here this morning,” said Justin. “This is more fun. I like how the store looks. It looks a lot better now.”
Matt said his mother worked at Stage and he is used to shopping here.
“The store is lighter and brighter,” he said. “I like the selection of clothes better.”
The interior of the store is bright and has brand names and departments printed high on the walls for ease in locating a section. Shoes are still in the back, but arranged differently.
Public restrooms also are available in the back of the store and easy to locate.
A housewares and gifts department overflowed with country decor and more, from iron plant stands to frames, artwork, clocks, roosters, buffet lamps, artificial flowers, nautical and ocean-themed decor.
Many of the items Stage carried, Peebles also carries, such as handbags, jewelry, etc.
There are clothing departments for juniors, misses and woman plus sizes, menswear, children and infant wear, sleepwear, lingerie and accessories.
Peebles carries higher-end brand names and prices and a wider range of colors in shoes.
“The new store is really nice,” said Alma Colvin of Hamilton, Ill., after completing her purchases on opening day. “I was a regular Stage shopper and I'm glad the store re-opened. I'll be here.”
Stage credit card holders can get a Peebles credit card and the store still accepts payments on Stage accounts.
Peebles offers VIP points award program and Club 50, special discounts for shoppers age 50 and older on the first Tuesday of the month.
Store hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
