Bogey-free round gives Ott first round lead

HAMILTON, Ill. - Clear Lake's Nick Ott played a mistake free round to take the first round lead in the boys 18-19 age division of the Pepsi Little People's Golf Championship Tuesday.

Ott, a member of the Indian Hiss Community College golf team, shot a three-under par 69 at Deer Run Golf Course. He leads Justin Bryant of St. Louis by two shots going into today's final round.

“I played really well,” Ott said. “I was just really solid.”

Ott recorded two birdies on the front nine for a 34 and added a birdie on the back nine for a 35. The key to his round, however, was 18 holes of bogey-free golf.

“No bogies really helped,” Ott said. “This course is actually pretty tough. You look at the scorecard and it's only 6,073 yards, but once you get out there the course is really tight. You really don't need a driver out there - just a lot of irons off the tee to put yourself on the fairway. The greens were really tough today, but I putted the ball well.”

A spectacular back nine helped Bryant move into second place.

Six golfers had a better score than Bryant on the front-nine, but Bryant fired a three-under 33 on the final nine holes to move into contention for the title. He was one of three golfers to shoot par or better on the back nine.

Jack Wadden of Evanston, Ill., is third with a two-over-par 74, and Ryan Otten of Springfield, Ill., is fourth with a 75.

Ott, a two-times all-state golfer with fourth- and third-place finishes in the 3A meet during his high school career, is looking forward to the challenges awaiting him today.

“I'm sure I'll be a little bit nervous, but I'm going to go out there and try to do the same thing as today,” Ott said.
