SportsHoskins wins KSB Bank Men's City Golf championshipBy Brad Cameron/Gate City Sports EditorJoe Hoskins has won the first flight title in the KSB Bank Men's City Golf Tournament two of the last three years. Sunday, Hoskins captured the top prize in the championship flight.
Hoskins, 18, fired a three-under par 69 at the Keokuk Country Club Sunday and finished the two-day tournament with a 141 to win the city title by three shots over Jeff Roth. “This is one of these tournaments I've always wanted to be in since I was a kid,” Hoskins said. “My step-dad always played in the tournament, and I always wanted to play in it when I got older. I never thought I had a chance at winning it, but that has changed.” Hoskins, who led Monmouth-Roseville to a fifth-place finish in the Illinois Class A State Tournament as a senior, shot a 72 at Elks Fairview Saturday. He trailed Chuck Schweite, a seven-time winner of the men's city tournament, by three shots heading into Sunday's final round. “The first day I didn't shoot nearly what I wanted to shoot,” Hoskins said. “I wanted to be in the mid 60s, but I felt pretty good about my chances because I was only three back. I've come back when I was six back before, so I knew I had a good chance.” Hoskins second-round didn't get off to a good start. His first shot of the day went out of bounds and he took a double-bogey. “I usually take a bad first hole, but I end up fine after that,” Hoskins said. “It's happened before.” Hoskins got the two shots lost on the first hole back on the front nine and finished with an even-par 36. He led Roth and Schweite, playing in the final group, by one shot with nine holes to play. Hoskins increased his lead with a birdie on the 10th hole. Roth sank a birdie putt on No. 11, but Hoskins answered with a short birdie putt on No. 12. “By the 12th hole I heard I was in the lead by two,” Hoskins said. “I felt some pressure.” It didn't show. Hoskins made consecutive birdie putts on No. 14 and No. 15 and added his fifth birdie on the back nine on No. 18. “I ended up with five birdies and two bogeys on the back nine,” Hoskins said. “I bogeyed two of the last three holes. It was pretty ugly.” Hoskins said the key to his 33 on the back nine was his approach shots to the green. “I was making five to six foot putts, which I needed to to get my birdies,” Hoskins said. “I made one about 15 feet on the 17th hole for birdie. “I played about the same as I did on the front nine. I just had that one bad hole. I could have had more birdies, but I missed some putts.” Roth shot a 74 Sunday and finished with a 144. Schweite and Mike Gorham each finished with a 147, but Schweite took the trophy on a scorecard playoff. Gorham's score was good enough to win his fourth senior division championship. Ivan Hasselbusch and Jim Hunter each tied for first in the super senior division with a 158, but Hasselbusch took the trophy on a scorecard playoff. Gary Peevler and Kevin Boltz each shot a 151 to tie for the low score in the first flight, but Peevler took the first-place trophy on a scorecard playoff. Dick Copeland was third with a 154. Don Steingreaber won the second flight title with a 162. Dan Robertson and Trent Kimberly finished two shots behind. Dave Olsen shot back-to-back rounds of 85 to win the third flight title. Fred Figge was second with a 171, and Tom Rose finished third with a 174. Randy Beelman took first in the fourth flight with a 187. Jeff Anderson was second with a 190, and Gary Johnson finished third with a 191. Copyright © 2010 - Daily Gate City
