DONNELLSON - The 10th annual Donnellson Apple Daze is scheduled Sept. 15-16 and committee members have been working organizing festival activities.

Donnellson Apple Daze is not alone in celebrating milestones. This being the 60th anniversary of the forming of the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts units in Donnellson, these groups will be recognized and dedicated during the flag raising at 7 am. Saturday, Sept. 15.

The Boys Scouts were organized a number of years prior to 1947 but these other two groups were formed by dedicated adults in the interest of other youth in the community.

Chris Bosley, Frances Mullen and Lucille Jack were early leaders, followed by many other dedicated adults throughout the 60 years.

The Donnellson unit operated as a lone troop until the early 1960s. At that time, they joined the Shining Trail Council. In 1966, the first day camp was held at Wilson Lake under the direction of Vi Wilson.

The Rev. E.K. Schneider and Jack Clemons took the younger boys under guidance forming the first Cub Scout unit in Donnellson. This group has had many leaders in the past 60 years.

Each year the Apple Daze Committee endeavors to bring something new to the celebration, however, many familiar events are planned.

Attendees will seek out the popular events that are continued and built upon. The majority of the Apple Daze events will be held in the revitalized Railroad Park, which continues with many changes.

An important part of the Apple Daze celebration is the gathering together of former residents, friends and school alumni. This is an opportunity for re-acquainting, visiting, enjoying good entertainment, taking part in activities and being welcomed by present residents, while the locals also are hosting and enjoying the festivities.

There will be an open house for alumni and friends of old Donnellson High School in the Pilot Grove Savings Bank community room on Saturday afternoon.

A quilt block contest is being held again this year. There are three age categories: junior (ages 14 and younger), intermediate (age 15-20) and adult (21 plus). Quilt blocks will be judged in three categories: most creative; best workmanship; and best use of color.

There will be a first, second and third placing in each category with cash prizes of $20, $15 and $10 respectively, as well as ribbons. All blocks become the property of Donnellson Apple Daze.

Mail or bring by Sept.1, to:

Audrey Seyb - 1851 - 190th St., Donnellson, IA 52625 (319-835-5574).

Lynn Kearns - 2155 - 270th St., Donnellson, IA 52625 (319-835-5644).

Helen Hennies - 211 Maple St., Donnellson, IA 52625 (319-835-5875).

Dee Beck - 205 Park St., Donnellson, IA 52625 (319-835-3150).

Last year's contest blocks are being developed into a quilt to be given away at this year's weekend event.

The annual apple pie baking contest will again be held Saturday. Two categories, two crust and streusel topped apple pies, will be judged with cash prizes of $15, $10 and $5 for first through third awarded in each category.

The Wayne Haeffner Car Show will be a special part of Apple Daze for the third year. For the second year the Three Rivers Antique Tractor Club is planning to be a part of the weekend event with a tractor display.

Garden tractor pullers should be getting their engines in prime working condition for the annual garden tractor pull, which will take place on Sunday afternoon.

The Apple Daze T-shirts are now available at Pilot Grove Savings Bank, Country Hair Design, Dr. Todd Babcock's office and at 320 Main St., Donnellson. These walking billboards advertising the Apple Daze include 10 apples depicting the observance of the 10th Donnellson Apple Daze. Herb Davison of Donnellson created the design.

They are available in light gray or white in sizes small, medium, large, X large, XX large, and XXX large, and are $11 each.

Annual events including the apple fun run, apple hoop shoot, back seat driving contest, apple of my eye contest, scarecrow contest, apple peeling contest, apple bingo and other challenges will take place at various times during the weekend.

Several musicians are on schedule for Donnellson Apple Daze 10th anniversary. World renowned bluegrass banjo player Bob Black and the Banjoy Band will perform at 5 p.m. Saturday. Bob and wife, Kristie, have traveled extensively and have performed with famous artists. Kirk Brandenberger will be lending his musical talent with them.

Three founding members of the Ozone Rambler Band will be on stage in the tent on Saturday afternoon Sept 15. Bronson, Ned and Dave will perform a number of tunes.

The Central Lee band will bring musical selections. Rounding out the slate of music groups for Saturday will be Don Johnson and Associates.

A professional musician humorist will finish the day's musical acts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the tent. He brings a combination of music, comedy and rope tricks in Western style to the stage.

On Sunday, the Rhythm Rockers of Mount Pleasant will take the stage in the tent. The group of all ages will add toe tapping tunes.

More details of these events and others will be forthcoming as the time nears. For further information call 319-835-9101 or 319-835-9078.
