Apple Days offers something for the whole family

DONNELLSON - Donnellson Apple Daze is Saturday and Sunday. Organizers are promising a fun-filled weekend for the entire family.
“At Donnellson Apple Daze you will find a friendly, homey, non-expensive, good, simple competition in various contests from adult pie baking, to hoop shoot, to stacking Oreos for kids (and for others if they want to try), a ride in the barrel train for youngsters or for teenagers and adults prove your ‘back-seat' driving skills,” said Elsie Roth, publicity chair for the event. “There are activities for all ages, music for all interests, and friends you will meet that perhaps you haven't seen in a number of years through the reunions.”
Roth said most of the events are free of charge.
The weekend starts off with a flag rising and opening ceremony at 7 a.m. Saturday dedicating the weekend to Donnellson's oldest family business - the fourth generation Dahms family, and the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts in Donnellson.
The ceremony will precede the pancake breakfast featuring apple sausage and apple syrup (traditional sausage and syrups also available).
An Apple Fun Run for the young and the young at heart” will be at 8 a.m. Saturday. Bake sales, book sales, quilt block judging and display, working demonstrations, children's flower arranging, children's activities, apple peeling contest, etc. will take place throughout the morning at various times.
The afternoon events start off with the Apple of My Eye winners being announced at 12:45 p.m. Horse drawn wagon rides will be available, in addition to Donnellson High School reunions, apple hoop shoot and an apple walk.
A variety of music will enhance the weekend activities. Local musicians Don Johnson and Friends will entertain on the stage in the tent a 9 a.m. and again at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The Central Lee High School Band will play some selections in the park at 10 a.m. Bronson Herrmuth, Ned Francis and Dave Roth, of the original Ozone Ramblers Band, will share their talents on the stage in the tent at 1:15 p.m. Saturday. The featured evening professional comedy musical show, with a touch of western flavor, is Pop Wagner at 7:30 p.m. in the tent.
Preceding the featured musical act is Banjoy Band, back by special requests a third year. With the Banjoy Band will be Bob and Kristie Black, well-known in the bluegrass/country arena, having played numerous times with the Grand Ole Opry. The band will perform at 5:30 p.m., and local artist Kirk Brandenberger will join the group.
Music continues on Sunday with the St Barnabas Choir from Montrose and surrounding area at 1 p.m. in the Pilot Grove Savings Bank community room and the Mount Pleasant Rhythm Rockers following at 2 p.m. in the community room. All musical events are free.
Other special events of interest are the Wayne Haeffner Memorial Car Show, the Three Rivers antique tractor display, the back seat driving competition and the garden tractor pull on Sunday afternoon.
