Teresa Geissler enjoys life in the country
Teresa Geissler of rural Hamilton, Ill., is a wife, mother and grandmother as well as a nurse.
Geissler became a license practical nurse in 1974, fulfilling a lifelong dream. She has been an LPN for about 32 years and enjoys private duty nursing, flowers, beading, crafting, four-wheeling and life in the country.
Geissler has participated in a Hurricane Katrina relief mission to Biloxi, Miss., serving in a makeshift clinic that was set up in a church.
Although cleanup work was nearly complete, Geissler said, “there remains a great need for labor to help rebuild the enormous amount of destruction that covers much of the coast of Mississippi and Louisiana area. The hope and determination of these people who have lost everything, gave me new hope and renewed my faith in the human spirit. I came back with a renewed sense of who I am and what I am here to do.”
What food are you most famous for? Butterscotch pecan pie.
What kind of music do you enjoy? I like all music except rap, heavy metal and heavy opera.
What are your hobbies? Singing, reading, crocheting, working on the computer, sewing crafts of all kinds and painting. I also like to go four-wheeling with my husband, fishing, camping and gardening.
Do you have a favorite pet (present or past)? Sam, our dog and Sox, our cat.
Where would you go if you won a trip anywhere in the world and why? Greek Islands, near the ocean. It looks so beautiful.
What has been life's most rewarding experience for you? My mission trip to Biloxi, Miss.
How many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren do you have? I have three children: Chris, 30; Taryn, 15; and Trey, 13; and two grandchildren, Alexis, 5, and Gavin, 2.
What book are you currently reading? “Women Who Run With the Wolves” by Clarissa Penkola Estes.
What is your least favorite food? Asparagus.
What is your favorite food? Fajitas and roast beef.
What makes a perfect summer day and how would you spend it if you could, anyway you wanted? A quiet, cool and sunny fall day with the smell of crisp apples and leaves in the air. I would start with a good book on the porch, then maybe a wienie roast and hayrack ride with my hubby to cuddle with and listen to the love and laughter of my family.
Have a favorite sport to do or watch? I like to watch tractor pulls and bull riding and no, I don't do either.
Favorite childhood, teen and adult book? Child - “Mother Westwind;” teen - “The Black Stallion” books, there were several; and adult - “Rebecca” and any Stephen King book.
Most memorable moment? My wedding day to my present husband and the births of my children.
Most famous person(s) you've met? No one that I can remember.
What do you do for fun? Read and play on my computer.
What do you like most about yourself? I am caring, considerate, compassionate and love to care for others.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I've wanted to be a nurse since I was around 5 years old. Also, an artist.
What do you collect? Carousel horses, Charished Teddies and clowns.
Where would you live if you had a choice? Where I am now, the Tennessee Blue Ridge Mountains or Paris, France. (I went there with my husband about 10 years ago.)
What is your favorite TV show and actor/actress? “MASH” and “Designing Women” in the past; “CSI: Miami” now. Favorite actors - Sean Connery, Kevin Costner and John Wayne. Actresses - Katharine Hepburn and Julia Roberts. I also like the sassiness of Dixie Carter and Delta Burke in “Designing Women.”
If you could have dinner with any three people (living or dead) who would they be? My grandparents on both sides.
What was your favorite subject(s) in school? Band, chorus and biology.
What was your first job? Teen volunteer (like a Candy Striper) at age 12, waitress at 13.
What was/is your favorite style/piece of clothing? 40s, big shoulder era, but still feminine.
Best word(s) of advice you've received? From my dad: “You've got to be smarter than the horse to ride it;” “Two wrongs don't make a right” and “What goes around, comes around.” He had more than one.
Favorite movie of all time? “Steel Magnolias,” “Dances With Wolves” and “Phantom of the Opera” - can't decide.
What is your favorite ethnic food? Mexican - steak fajitas.
How did you meet your spouse (if married)? Through a local singles group. Funny thing is he only lived about four miles north of me on the same road.
Person you admire most and why? My husband because he is strong, true-blue and self-confident.
If you had a motto, what would it be? “Whatever.” I used to say it all the time and drove my mom nuts.
What is your most memorable and/or embarrassing food experience? When I was about 13-14 I made Dream Whip, a whipped topping you made from a powder by adding milk. Apparently, I added two much milk and we tried everything to thicken it up. I put in chocolate chips, coconut and had to break up the cake we were going to put it on and mixed it in. It never did get thick. And I had made it blue, so it was very strange looking. But it tasted good!
What is your favorite recipe? Bing cherry salad.
