DES MOINES - The Keokuk Chiefs reaped the benefits of winning a football state title by placing five players on the Iowa Newspaper Association All-State first team in Class 3A.

Selected to the 3A first team were seniors James Vandenberg, James Hurt, Logan Granera and Evan Isaacs on offense and senior Cole Lockwood on defense.

“I've told everybody that I'm spoiled,” said Keokuk Head Coach Jayson Campbell. “We've just got real good football players and those five are certainly a good example of that.”

Quarterback James Vandenberg was named captain of the 3A team. He finished his high school career by leading his team to a 3A title. He also set a handful of passing records along the way. Among the records Vandenberg set are: most yards passing in a season (3,729), most TD passes in a season (49), most yards in a career (7,677) and most TD passes in a career (93). The senior also heads the list of 2,000-yard-plus passers in back-to-back seasons, racking up 2,654 yards in 2006.

“I've been privileged enough to call plays for him,” Campbell said. “He's a special talent, but he has worked very hard.

“The big difference between last year and this year for James is his decision making is so fast. I can put in the right plays most of the time, but he's the one who ultimately chooses what we're going to do, and he does it better than anyone of where he is going to go most of the time.”

Hurt and Granera, two of Vandenberg's favorite targets, also received first team honors.

Hurt finished the season with 79 receptions for 1,318 yards and 19 touchdowns. He caught a touchdown in every game Keokuk played this season.

“I think James Hurt has improved as much as anyone from his junior to his senior season,” Campbell said. “I'm proud of him because of his demeanor and how approaches the game, the way he would focus and get himself ready mentally ready. He just refuses to lose. That's how he is as a competitor, and that's what sets him apart.”

Granera also had more than 1,000 yards receiving for the Chiefs. He finished with 69 receptions for 1,012 yards and nine touchdowns.

“Teams really tried to shut down Hurt, and Logan emerged as a guy we could really go to,” Campbell said. “He made big plays throughout the season.

“I thought he was invaluable to our team. He's a great kicker. He's a good punter, and he did a nice job in the defensive backfield. All the things he did for us, and he also ended up with 1,000 yards receiving by the time it was all said and done.”

Isaacs made the transition from playing center as a junior to moving to left guard his senior season. He was part of an offensive unit that recorded 6,312 yards and scored 610 points.

“Evan is a two-year starter up front for us,” Campbell said. “He's a smart kid and really solid and dependable. You know what you're going to get with him.

“He was valuable on defense also. He was our most solid, consistent linebacker throughout the season.”

Lockwood was the lone Keokuk representative on defense. He returned three interceptions for touchdowns and blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown this season.

“He really put it together for us, and he did when it mattered the most,” Campbell said. “There was something that happened after the Washington game. Cole really turned the corner and became a dominant player for us. He just grew into a monster for us on defense.

“Cole never came off the field. He's the only guy we have on every single special team unit we have. I don't know if we took him off the field too many times to give him a breather, but down the stretch he never came off the field.”

In Class 2A, Central Lee senior Wes McGraw was chosen to the second team offense as a wide receiver.

McGraw finished with 79 receptions for 1,161 yards. He ended the season with 20 receptions for 269 yards against Wilton.
