Bonior: Edwards picking up more support
By Steve Dunn/Gate City Managing Editor
Former congressman David Bonior of Michigan sees the tide turning toward Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, who is locked in a tight race with Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois.
“We're seeing a lot of momentum for Edwards now with the Bruce Braley and Mari Culver endorsements,” said Edwards' national campaign manager during a stop in Keokuk Thursday. “I check with other field offices daily and independents are breaking off more and more for Edwards now.”
A member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 26 years and Democratic Whip for 10 years, Bonior now teaches at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. After leaving Congress, he started the American Rights At Work organization.
“I do the hiring and facilitate the communication among the departments,” he said when asked to explain his duties as national campaign manager. “My job is to make sure it works, keep the spirit up and deliver the message.”
The Edwards' campaign has 170 field workers in Iowa and 80 in New Hampshire.
“He (Edwards) has to do well in Iowa. Second or third will keep him alive as long as its close,” Bonior said. “We believe we're going to win. Edwards has visited all 99 counties in Iowa twice - the only candidate to do that.
“We think he's the most progressive candidate. Recent polling shows Edwards beating the Republican nominee by a wider margin than other Democratic candidates.”
Edwards has spent much of his time attacking lobbyists and special interests and their influence in American politics.
“Edwards believes strongly we have to fight for the middle class and working class and fight lobbyists, which begins in Washington,” Bonior said. “That won't happen unless we stand up to lobbyists and special interests. We need somebody to stand up to them like Teddy Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy did.”
What makes Bonior sure that can be accomplished?
“The country is ready for it and Edwards can use the bully pulpit,” Bonior responded.
According to Edwards' national campaign manager, there are about 60 lobbyists for every member of Congress.
“We're different from the other candidates in that sense,” Bonior said. “Others support that community or sit down and talk with them. Edwards is the only candidate never to take PAC (political action committee) money.”
Edwards' 80-page “Plan To Build One America” addresses standing up for working and middle class families, ending the Iraq war and restoring America's moral leadership, building a better future for the next generation and opportunity for all.
