Bald eagles to soar over Keokuk Jan. 19-20

The American Bald Eagle is again soaring over the Mississippi River around Keokuk. The 24nd annual Bald Eagle Appreciation Days will be held Jan. 19-20.

Observation points will be set up at the George M. Verity Riverboat Museum and at the Southside Boat Club. Personnel from the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Lee County Conservation Board, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Illinois Department of Natural Resources will be at the observation points to assist. Wildlife, conservation and environmental agencies will exhibit in the River City Mall.

Seminars given throughout the weekend will include “Mussels of the Upper Mississippi” by Dr. Richard Anderson, head of the Biology Department, Western Illinois University. Lisa Hoffman, district forrester with the Iowa DNR, will talk about concerns with the Emerald Ash Borer as it makes its way toward Iowa and Missouri and “Bobcats - They're Back,” a report on bobcats and the new trapping season in Iowa, will be given by Todd Gosselink, wildlife biologist with the Iowa DNR.

The World Bird Sanctuary of St. Louis will present live bird presentations throughout the weekend at the Plaza Cinema in the River City Mall. Featured birds this year include the barn owl, red tailed hawk, wedge tailed hawk from Australia, white necked raven and, of course, the star of the show, the American bald eagle. The presentations are free and are presented hourly beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Worthen Earth Searchers have coordinated a rock, mineral and fossil show. Featured will be the Keokuk geode, along with rocks from around the world. The show will be held inside the River City Mall.


Native American activities will be present throughout both days. Learn Native American history of the Keokuk area. This year's activities include The Night Eagle Singers from Wisconsin. Also featured will be Pablo and J.J. Kemp, both recording artists on the Native American flute.

The Keokuk Wood Carvers Club will expand their show this year to include carvers from throughout the Midwest. More 40 tables of carvings this year will be located in the Holiday Inn Express, across from the River City Mall.

Bald Eagle Appreciation Days is presented by the Keokuk Area Convention and Tourism Bureau and the Lee County Conservation Board.
