Hamilton librarian enjoys spaghetti
Nancy Denton is the librarian at the Hamilton Public Library. She has lived in Quincy, Ill., for the past 19 years. Originally from Danville, Ill., she worked at the Quincy Public Library for 15 years where she was the children's programmer.
What food are you most famous for? I am not the best cook in the world, but my kids absolutely love my overnight salad.
What kind of music do you enjoy? I enjoy a lot of music, but my favorites are Big Bands, 50s and 60s, and believe it or not, Techno.
What are your hobbies? I am an avid reader. If I am riding in a car for more than 20 minutes at a time, I must have my book. Also, I can't go to bed without reading for at least 20 minutes. I also like to play games on my computer: Jigzone, Mahjong and Spider Solitaire.
Do you have a favorite pet (present or past)? When I was little I had a dog named Mickey. He was an outside dog and he slept right outside my window every night. We lived in sort of a cul-de-sac and Mickey would know immediately if someone different came into the neighborhood.
Where would you go if you won a trip anywhere in the world and why? I would like it to be a cruise to the Virgin Islands.
What has been life's most rewarding experience for you? Giving birth to my sons is by far and away the most rewarding experience in my entire life. But, actually, marrying my husband, becoming a grandmother and receiving my MLIS degree are right up there in second place.
How many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren do you have? I have three sons and one amazing grandson. Two of my boys are firemen/first responders/EMTs and my oldest son is paramedic serving in the United States Army in Baghdad.
What book are you currently reading? I wanted to start something different, so I started reading “Wish You Were Here” by
Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown.
What is your least favorite food? Sweet potatoes and brussels sprout.
What is your favorite food? I have a lot: chili with cornbread, spaghetti, pizza, apple fritters and chocolate chip cookies.
What makes a perfect summer day and how would you spend it if you could, anyway you wanted? A perfect summer day is when there are big, white fluffy clouds in the sky, the temperature is in the 70s, and there is a slight breeze. I would spend it reading on my deck.
Have a favorite sport to do or watch? I only like to watch sports if my family is playing. I used to go to baseball games and soccer matches. I also like to watch ice skaters.
Favorite childhood, teen and adult book? My favorite childhood books were the “Bobbsey Twins.” My favorite teen book was “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” and adult book is “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Most memorable moment? When I was baptized. That day was the most perfect day I have ever spent.
Most famous person(s) you've met? I don't get out much. I really haven't met any famous people. Famous for me includes those people who are most important in my life.
What do you do for fun? I like to work puzzles, the 1,000-piece kind.
What do you like most about yourself? That I have a passion for reading to kids. I love, more than anything, being in a reading circle with a bunch of 3- and 4-year- olds and watching their faces while I read a story to them and then having them ask me to read more.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A teacher. I always played school with my friends and I was always the teacher.
What do you collect? Bills! No, really, I collect anything having to do with Thomas Kinkade.
Where would you live if you had a choice? I would like to live in a small town, like Hamilton, where everyone knows each other and have friends everywhere you look. I used to lived in a small town on the eastern border of Illinois and simply loved it.
What is your favorite TV show and actor/actress? “ER” and George Clooney.
If you could have dinner with any three people (living or dead) who would they be? The first would be Jesus (I have a lot of questions that only He can answer), my grandmother (she was the most wonderful grandma in the world and I want to be just like her) and George Clooney.
What was your favorite subject in school? Math.
What was your first job? I was a car-hop at a drive-in restaurant that prided itself in red-hot hot dogs and frosted mugs of rootbeer.
What was/is your favorite style/piece of clothing? I love the Victorian era dresses.
Best word(s) of advice you've received? My father always told me, “Never leave a job without the employer wanting you back.” I guess that is why I grow roots where I work and find it hard to leave a job.
Favorite movie of all time? “You've Got Mail” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
What is your favorite ethnic food? Spaghetti.
How did you meet your spouse (if married)? We were introduced by way of mail through a mutual friend while he was in the Air Force. We corresponded for five months before we met.
Person you admire most and why? I really admire my friend Karen. She is my favorite Christian sister, my ego booster and a wonderful friend.
If you had a motto, what would it be? My motto would be “Let Go and Let God.”
What is your most memorable and embarrassing food experience? My most memorable food experience was in Israel. We were at a meal that was prearranged by our hosts. Fish was the meal of the day. I really don't care for fish unless it is batter dipped and deep fried. But I agreed to try it. When they brought it (Tilapia) the head and tail were still attached and the eyes of the fish were looking at me. I had to put a napkin over the head just so I could eat the fish, which ended up being very good.
Sweet n' sour meatballs
Ingredients:
1 lb. hamburger
1 large white potato
1 medium onion
salt and pepper to taste
Sauce:
1 can tomato soup
1/2 can water
1/4 cup vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar
Directions:
Grate potato and onion. Add to hamburger. Shape into balls. Brown in very little shortening in a dutch oven.
Drain any grease from the pan.
Simmer all sauce ingredients in a saucepan. Then add the sauce to the meatballs.
Bake for about 45 minutes at 350 degrees or let simmer on low all day in a crockpot.
