Nine Keokuk seniors to play football in college

Published: Wednesday, February 6, 2008 2:30 PM CST
The college football signing period started today. Nine seniors off the state championship Keokuk football team have made their decisions final on which colleges they will attend.

The list includes: James Vandenberg, University of Iowa; James Hurt and Logan Granera, Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.; Mike Nuenedorf, University of Nebraska-Omaha; Kyler Barnes, Trevor Galbreath, Cole Lockwood and Paul Money, Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge; and Alex Edler, Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.

“This just shows again the quality of athletes we had,” said Keokuk Head Coach Jayson Campbell. “I've said all along we were pretty spoiled coaching this group. They were dependable guys and a lot of fun to be around. They had the skills to be successful, and they had the drive to succeed. All of them will be an asset to the programs they attend.”

A press conference scheduled for today at Keokuk High School was postponed due to weather. Keokuk did not have school today. The press conference for the nine players will be held Thursday at the high school.

The seniors reaped the benefits of an amazing season. Keokuk outscored its opponents 610-188 during a 12-1 season. The Chiefs won their final 10 games and defeated Bishop Heelan 42-7 for the Class 3A state title.

“I've never had so many coaches come through during my six years here,” Campbell said. “It just reflects on the amount of quality kids we have.”

Nine may not be the final total of Keokuk players moving on the next level.

“We still have a couple of guys who have an opportunity, but haven't made a decision yet,” Campbell said. “There are others we could have played at the next level, but have decided to do other things.”

One thing is certain, Campbell and his brother Chad, Keokuk's defensive coach, have many options with what to do with their Saturdays.

“I told my brother now we have several places we can go to watch them play,” Campbell said. “This is an exciting time, and I am happy for them.”
