Wilson charged with child endangerment

FORT MADISON - A Fort Madison man recently on trial for animal torture now faces a new charge - child endangerment, a Class D felony.
Terry Wilson, 28, of 2514 Ave. O, Fort Madison, was accused of killing his dog with a sword in July, went on trial in January and was released after Judge Emily Dean declared a mistrial because jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision.
On Tuesday, Wilson was charged with child endangerment and arrested again by Fort Madison police. According to the complaint signed by Assistant Lee County Attorney Gordon Liles, Wilson allegedly struck his 20-month-old son, Ivan Wilson, with a paddle on Jan. 28, which caused bruising to both buttocks visible days later.
In an affidavit from Sharon Andrusyk, who investigated the incident for the Iowa Department of Human Services, Andrusyk says she and a social worker, Beth Boeding, spoke with Wilson's daughter, Lillian Wilson. The girl told them that her brother had a “bruise on his butt” and that “her daddy hit Ivan with a paddle” while making her stand in the corner because the two would not go to bed.
Andrusyk further says that on Jan. 30, the children's daycare provider, Joyce Caauwe, changed Ivan's diaper and observed “a very large bruise upon both buttocks.” Andrusyk says that Caauwee then called Terry Wilson to report her observation and that he told her he had “no idea what happened to Ivan.”
Upon further inquiry, Andrusyk says Wilson admitted to striking his son with the paddle and added that he “went too far.” The paddle is described by Andrusyk as being made of wood, approximately 18 inches long with one end being about four inches wide and the other tapered to make a handle with the board being about one-half an inch thick.
She adds that three holes were drilled in the upper section of the paddle and that it appeared the paddle had been chewed on by a dog.
Upon viewing photos taken of Ivan Wilson's bruises, Andrusyk confirmed that the act constitutes causing bodily injury as defined by Iowa law.
Wilson was taken into custody Tuesday. Bail on the arrest warrant has been set at $10,000, without a 10 percent deposit being allowed.

" Beating a baby that isnt even two years old or any age for that matter, with a board is child abuse no matter what part of the body it is on. What happened to putting him in a baby bed or even rocking the baby to sleep. This man does not need to be around animals or defenseless children... A baby that has "gone too far" Please!!!!! "
