DONNELLSON - “I've got cabin fever” is an often heard comment this time of the year.

Wikipedia defines cabin fever as “a condition that produces restlessness and irritability caused from being in a confined space,” especially when you are “isolated and/or shut in for an extended period of time.”

It is thought that the term possibly originated in the United States at the time when settlers would be snowed into their log cabins and had to wait for the spring thaw in order to travel to town.

Feeling restless or irritable? Here are a couple of suggestions that may help.

A possible “cure” was found on the Internet in the form of Cabin Fever Vacations in the Tennessee Great Smokey Mountains.

However, a less costly and more local “cure” would be to attend the upcoming Cabin Fever Craft Show at Central Lee High School.

The event begins at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, closing at 3 p.m. Cost is $1 for adults, 50 cents for both high and middle school students, and free for ages 12 and under. This is a collaborative fund-raising effort sponsored by the Central Sports and Music Booster organizations.

A wide variety of crafts will be available for purchase, including Amish furniture, candles, barb wire creations, wool sweaters, woodcrafts, fudge, home decor and jewelry.

Food will be served in the cafeteria throughout the show. The menu features barbecue pulled pork or hot turkey sandwiches, homemade macaroni salad, fruit salad and three locally famous homemade sweets - cherry cheesecake, strawberry pretzel dessert and chocolate cake. Food items may be purchased individually. A meal deal also will be offered.
