DONNELLSON - Donnellson Vision Inc. had a busy year in 2007, according to Lori Welch, a member of the organization.

The DVI Committee was formed in 2005 as part of the Iowa Living Roadways Community Visioning Program in collaboration with the Iowa DOT, the Living Roadway Trust Fund, Iowa State University and Trees Forever.

A recap of the past year's activities include:

Donnellson Vision Inc. participates in the second annual Earth Day cleanup for the four entranceways to Donnellson and the interstate ramps in April.

More than 20 volunteers donated three hours of their time and are rewarded with a pizza lunch from Casey's General Store.

Approximately 1,800 pounds of trash is collected.

Red and green color theme continues on the new Railroad Park sign bringing the original name of the park back to the updated city park. A new railroad-inspired “Donnellson” sign is installed on the shelter house.

TTT donations provide new adult swings and baby swings to the park playground equipment.

Three Blue Spruce trees, provided by a MidAmerican Energy $1,000 grant, are planted next to the historic depot.

The 4th of July parade crowd is treated to the surprise return of the 1880s restored depot wagon.

The wagon rode aboard a float with the bronze firefighter statue. The parade theme is “It's a Grand Old Town.” The entry is awarded grand prize by the judges.

The Carole Mueller plaque is mounted on a new stone donated by the Evelyn Bogart family in the front landscaped beds of Railroad Park.

The north side of the depot features a new raised landscaped bed with shade perennials.

The depot railroad cart dating back to the 1880s is refurbished by the inmates of the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility and displayed.

Interior remodeling of the depot starts with new red/white curtains to the north side. Grants are submitted for construction work of the chimney, siding and the inside.

The search begins for a group to take the lead in the interior plans.

Two existing wooden and concrete benches are power washed and restained by DVI members bringing them back to their original beauty.

The Mennonite historical sign was moved next to the depot for better viewing and a new planting of mums.

Shorty Roth family donates a large porch swing to north end of the newly installed playground set donated by Pilot Grove Savings Bank.

The whole area was finished off with red and charcoal patio blocks done by Schiller's Flower and Foliage, creating a family friendly space.

Matching patio blocks were placed in downtown Donnellson between the Wooden Pig Restaurant and Dick's Barber Shop under the recycled park bench that encourages the residents to “Become Part of the Vision.”

In September the bronze memorial firefighter statue is placed on its new brick base at the Fire Station Memorial Plaza in time for the Apple Daze celebration.

The concrete, brick and trees are completed due in part to donations from local volunteers, Gary Sanders Masonry, Mid American Energy “Trees Please” grant and Fort Madison Ready Mix.

Residents donate historical items:

E.P. Armknecht Implement signs and photos of the family.

Mike Easter donates train photo of C.B. & Q. Burlington train 77 from 1967 he found on ebay.

Ebay also yields a postcard from 1912, discovered by Ryan Frueh.

Railcar photo with label “Flour from Lee County Mills” from Roberta Krehbiel.

A collection of Donnellson building photos by Colleen Kirchner.

Bronze statue of two children on a bench reading a book, provided by an anonymous donor, is installed in front of the Donnellson library.

Faye Kirchner memorial bronze statue of a girl with two dogs was purchased by her family to be placed in Railroad Park when the weather permits.

Donation canisters in Donnellson businesses continue to add dollars to the project fund.

Lamm Trades donates diamond earrings valued at $1,200 for the 2007 raffle fund-raiser. Tickets are sold June through the Nov. 24 drawing.

Additional activities:

June 16 - Citywide Yard Sales. Local citizens donate yard sale, baked goods and plants for the yard sale fund-raiser at Railroad Park. Walking tacos are served.

Proceeds go to the Fire Station Memorial Plaza.

Sept. 15-16 - Apple Daze brings another fund-raising effort for DVI.

The commemorative Apple Daze buttons feature the fire station bronze statue purchased by the Jerry Schlicher Memorial.

The DVI hot dog stand is a hit for the second year.

Fund-raising continues:

A $200 challenge is issued to local businesses by Dr. Todd Babcock and $1,000 is raised. A $100 challenge follows from Dave and Kathy Frueh, which raises $1,100.

An $800 donation from the Eunice Overton memorial goes toward construction of a four-piece children's wooden train set to placed west of the depot. Bruce Hopp is working on the assembly to be ready for spring 2008.

DVI committee held its final meeting for 2007 in November and wraps up the Fire Station Memorial fund-raising project.

The DVI meeting are held the third Tuesday of the month. 2008 meetings will start this month.
