Jerry Kearns of Keokuk has announced his candidacy for state representative from the 92nd District in the June 3 Democratic primary election.
Kearns is seeking the position of retiring state Rep. Phil Wise, D-Keokuk.
Commenting on the House office that will be vacated when Wise retires after this term, Kearns said, “Phil's work on behalf of the 92nd District - particularly in the areas of economic development and education - have been more than impressive. While his legacy will be difficult to match, I believe I have a unique ability to provide exemplary service to the citizens of the district.
“I have always been interested in government and involved in service to people whether as an elected official or in representing workers,” Kearns said. “I am confident the 92nd District - and indeed Iowa - has significant opportunities to make significant progress in many areas that are important to all Iowans. I want to contribute to that effort as a member of our state Legislature.”
Kearns served on the Lee County Board of Supervisors for 18 years beginning in 1983. He currently is staff representative for the United Steelworkers International Union. Prior to his current position, he was employed for 38 years by Metzeler Automotive (formerly Sheller-Globe) in Keokuk as an industrial electrician and served 20 years as president of the local union at that facility.
Kearns' wife, Diane, is the director of health information at Keokuk Area Hospital. They have two sons, Christopher of Montrose and Aaron of Quincy, Ill., and seven grandchildren.
Saying his service to the state of Iowa and Lee County has provided the experience and understanding needed to be effective in Des Moines, Kearns added, “I look forward to the challenges that service will pose and expect that my constituency will hold me to a high standard in representing them. If nominated and elected, I pledge to serve the citizens of the district with a sense of integrity and responsiveness.
“However, that service will only be possible with the support of the voters in the June 3 primary election. I sincerely solicit that support.”
