Library offers ‘Big Read' program

The Keokuk Public Library has been included in a grant by the Galesburg Public Library and Western Illinois Reads to offer a “Big Read” program.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to restore reading to the center of American culture.
“A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemingway is the selected book, said Keokuk Public Library Director Emily Rohlfs.
In the month of April, including National Library Week, the Keokuk Public Library will be having three events for the Big Read.
All events will take place in the Round Room at the library, 210 N. Fifth St. Rohlfs will host a book discussion on “A Farewell to Arms” from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 5. A dozen copies of the book are available for check out at the library.
Paula Huntley will give a program on her book, “The Hemingway Book Club of Kosovo” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 8. Three copies are available for check out at the library.
The library will play the 1932 film adaptation of “A Farewell to Arms” with Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 17.
