Tri-State Rodeo a little bit country, little bit rock n' roll

FORT MADISON - A rock band at a professional rodeo? What would Gene Autry say?
He might say if it's what the people want ....
Legendary rock and roll band 38 Special will be one of the two major acts performing at the 61st annual Tri-State Rodeo, which is Sept. 3-6 at the C.E. “Eddie” Richards Arena.
The other performer, however, is Jason Aldean, who earned the 2006 Country Music Award for Top New Male Vocalist of the Year. He'll perform Friday night after the the completion of the 7:30 p.m. rodeo. Then on Saturday, 38 Special will bring something new to the traditional country stage.
A rock band isn't that unusual any more, according to Tri-State Rodeo Chairman Ty Louck, and the rodeo committee received many requests for it.
“We heard a lot of people suggest we try a rock and roll band,” Louck said at Friday night's formal announcement at Capt Kirk's. “A lot of other rodeos have been getting a rock and roll band and doing well with it.”
But AC/DC and Kiss weren't on the short list.
“We tried to look for a band that wasn't too hard of a rock and roll band,” Louck said. “It's a southern rock band.”
Gizmo McCracken will be back with Gizmo's Comedy Show for the nightly entertainment during the rodeo.
As in the past, the Wednesday and Thursday shows will start at 7 p.m. Louck said something new this year will be a musical performer on Thursday's “Family Night” performance.
The pre-rodeo events begin Saturday, Aug. 30, with the pancake breakfast, the Special Olympics rodeo will be Sunday, and Monday will feature the Li'l Spurs Rodeo. Also Monday will be the annual Hy-Vee dinner, followed by the Li'l Miss and Li'l Mister Rodeo contest.
On Tuesday, the Lee County Farm Bureau will replace the Pinnacle Corp. in serving the meal.
Boyd Polhamus returns as the rodeo announcer, and Bobby Reed will again parachute into the arena with the American flag.
38 Special
The group originally began in 1975, formed by neighborhood friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant in Jacksonville, Fla. Van Zant's older brother, Ronnie, sang lead for the band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
38 Special made some changes to their sound in the 1980s, adding elements of blues-rock and arena rock. The current lineup consists of Barnes and Van Zant, guitarist Danny Chauncey, bassist Larry Junstrom (formerly of Lynyrd Skynyrd), keyboard and vocalist Bobby Capps and drummer Gary Moffatt.
Jason Aldean
Yet another case of someone taking 15 years to become an overnight success, Aldean got into the music business through his father. His parents were divorced when he was 3, and he mostly lived with his mother in Macon, Ga.
Aldean played in clubs during high school and passed up college to pursue a musical career. After a few unsuccessful contracts, he finally signed with Broken Bow Records in 2005.
“Hicktown” was his breakthrough hit that won him the New Male Vocalist of the Year honor. His two albums are “Jason Aldea,” which went platinum, and “Relentless,” which features the No. 1 gold single “Why.”
