Despite temperatures that struggled to reach 40 degrees, the annual 800 Block Party and Auction in Keokuk Saturday drew a record number of runners and may have surpassed last year's fund-raising total for the Easter Seals Foundation.

“It went extremely well. We put more than $8,000 in the bank Saturday,” said honorary mayor Sue Dickson. “We should come close to what we made last year (about $12,000) or maybe even a little more.”

A total of 129 people participated in the Stan Waldron 5K Run/Walk for Sweet Success in which Josh Long, 26, finished first in a record time of 18:27. Mike Nelson, 52, placed second in 18:57, while Mike Girard, 29, was third in 19:15.

Emily Kull, 27, finished first among female runners with a time of 23:53. Margaret Schneider, 42, was second at 24:18. Kayla Hawkins, 23, placed third among all the women with a time of 25:50.

“We had a good turnout for the race considering the weather we had,” said Tim Peevler, who was in charge of the race. “It's always a good event (the 800 Block Party and Auction) and the community supports it.”

Several items were auctioned in the former Henke Hardware building in the afternoon. They included a one-year subscription to the Daily Gate City, a weekend in the Ozarks, an Amana get away and golf outing at Deer Run Golf Course in Hamilton, Ill.

Many package prizes were auctioned, including two $25 passes at Fun City and a treat at Dairy Queen; videos from Blockbuster, scrap booking, listening to a CD, going bowling and having lunch at Burger King or pizza from Papa Murphy's; and a tan at Shear Magic for one month, clothing from Fazes, dry cleaning at Deluxe Cleaners and a frame at Great River Gallery.

McNamara's Band braved the chilly temperatures and performed outside.

“We didn't have as much outside entertainment due to the weather,” Dickson said.
