Boltz places second at Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals

Published: Monday, April 28, 2008 2:04 PM CDT
Lakyn Boltz is the national runner-up in the girls 10-11 age division in the Elks Hoop Shoot National Free Throw Contest at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass.

Boltz made 21 of 25 free throws to finish second among the 12 girls who qualified for the national finals.

“I asked her on the way home if she was happy or satisfied with the outcome. She said she was satisfied,” said Kevin Boltz, Lakyn's father.

Boltz opened by making eight of 10 foul shots in the first round. She made her first two free throws before missing her next two foul shots. She finished the first round by making her final six attempts.

Boltz was tied with three other competitors for third place. Maggie Goltz and Katie McWilliams each made all 10 of their free throws. Melinda Trimmer and Jaycie Harvey each made 8-of-10 free throws.

After a long wait, Boltz stepped to the line for her final 15 foul shots. She missed her first two, but regrouped and finished strong, making her final 13 attempts in the second round.

“She kept her composure to make those final 13 free throws and finish second,” Kevin said. “No one else in her division made 13 in a row in the final round.”

The girls 10-11 age division featured past national champions from the 8-9 age division. Boltz won the title two years ago, and Goltz of Falls City, Neb., won the title last year.

Goltz would go on to win her second consecutive title in different age divisions. She made 13 of her final 15 free throws to finish with 23.

Harvey finished third with 20, while McWilliams and Trimmer each made 19 foul shots.

Boltz made her third consecutive appearance at the Elks Hoop Shoot National Free Throw Contest Saturday. She made 24-of-25 free throws to win the 8-9 age division two years ago and finished sixth last year in the 10-11 age division with 19-of-25 free throws.

Boltz represented Keokuk Elks Lodge No. 106. She is the daughter of Kevin and Shane Boltz.
