Keokuk gives average of 4 percent increase to administrators

Three Keokuk School District administrators received two-year contracts and seven received annual renewals with one-year contracts for the 2008-2009 school year.

The school board approved the administrative contracts and an average 4 percent increase in compensation on May 5.

Superintendent Jane Babcock, who was in the second year of a three-year contract this year, was given a two-year contract, covering the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years. Babcock's salary increases from $111,140 this year to $115,600 next year.

This school year, Babcock ran the school district and served as principal of Torrence Elementary School, Kid Zone director and coordinator of the district's Title I program.

In a district update e-mailed May 2, Babcock said she will delegate some of those duties to allow her to mentor new staff that will be hired for next year.

Keokuk High School is advertising for a new principal as Dave Keane, hired in 2003, has resigned to move to Fort Dodge. He earned $89,130 this year, serving in the first year of a two-year contract. KHS also will return to having an assistant principal, a position that was eliminated when former associate principal Roger Kokemuller retired in 2004.

A third new principal will be hired for George Washington Elementary School.

Longtime principal Tim Patterson has been at George Washington this year. Next year, Patterson will move to Torrence Elementary again, where he served in 2006-2007. In addition, Patterson will serve as the administrator for the district's grades 7-12 alternative school as well as the coordinator of the Title I program.

The alternative school has been under the administration of the high school principal since administrator Jim Schneider retired in 2002.

“Thanks to Tim for taking this assignment and his foresightedness in planning for the future,” Babcock said.

“Next year will bring much challenge and opportunity to our district. As always, I know the Keokuk Community School District staff is ready to meet the challenges that change can bring. Never forget that along with challenge come new celebrations.”

In March, the board approved hiring a district computer network manager. Brent Haage will begin working in the district for the 2008-2009 school year at $55,000.

Also receiving two-year contracts are Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lora Wolff, with an increase from $92,000 salary this year to $95,700 next year, and business manager Greg Reynolds, with an increase from $82,000 to $85,300 for next year.

Other administrators with one-year contract renewals are:

n Keokuk Middle School Principal Steve Carman, whose salary increases from $82,580 to $85,900.

n Hawthorne Elementary Principal Sharon Kokemuller, whose salary increases from $81,010 to $84,250.

n Wells-Carey Principal Russ Derr, whose salary increases from $80,010 to $83,200.

n Activities Director Mike Niece, whose salary increases from $78,890 to $82,050.

n Patterson, whose salary increases from $80,010 to $81,600.

n Keokuk Middle School Associate Principal Linda Beck, whose salary increases from $69,960 to $72,750.

n Keokuk High School Student Services Director David Wendt, whose salary increases from $65,630 to $68,250.

“We're not replacing Jayson Campbell as a dean of students,” said Babcock. “Sue Nash and Ryan Bliss, guidance counselor, will continue as dean of students.”

Campbell, also the varsity head high school football coach, resigned to take an administrative position in the Mount Pleasant School District. He was scheduled to earn a base salary of $43,029 next year, an additional $690 for working three days beyond the school calendar; $4,748 as football coach and program coordinator; $1,187 for coaching the high school weight program; and $4,155 for program coordinator and track coach; for a total of $53,809 in 2008-2009. Campbell had a total contract of $50,759 this year.

Wells-Carey Kid Zone site coordinator Laurie Mendenhall will take over as district director of Kid Zone and will be paid $50,000.

Wendt will continue as KHS student services director, Babcock said. He will handle less discipline measures and be more involved in guidance. Wendt also teaches a freshmen transitions class.

Supervisors (transportation) Alan Caudill and (food services) Connie Hauser will earn slightly more than a 4 percent increase in salary; James Kavanaugh, supervisor of maintenance and custodial, will earn slightly less than a 4 percent increase in salary next year.

In April, the school board approved a 3 percent increase in teachers' base salaries for the 2008-2009 school year. With the district's payment of health insurance premiums increasing 4.4 percent for family members, the total package is pegged at a 4.3 percent increase for teachers.
