Fatality in tractor rollover accident Wednesday

WEST POINT, Ill. - A Basco, Ill., man died after a tractor rollover Wednesday about four miles southeast of Sutter, Ill.
John J. Jacobs, 80, was operating a 1971 Allis-Chalmers 190 loader tractor at about 10 a.m. on 1150 East County Road, three-tenths of a mile south of 450 North County Road.
According to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, he was helping Gary Jacobs, 63, West Point, Ill., who driving a 1982 Allis Chalmers 8010 pulling a field cultivator on the road.
The cultivator had lost a tire, so the bucket loader on the loader tractor was chained to the rear of the cultivator, picking up the cultivator end that lost the tire.
After traveling a short distance down the road, the cultivator lost the tire on the other end of the cultivator.
With the loss of the tire, Gary Jacob's tractor pulled over into the right ditch, also pulling the cultivator and the second tractor into the ditch.
The combination of the steep bank and weight of the cultivator caused the loader tractor to rollover and come to rest on its top while still chained to the cultivator.
When the loader tractor rolled over, it pinned John Jacobs under the tractor. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:40 a.m.
The Hancock County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Hancock County Ambulance Service from Carthage and the Warsaw Ambulance Service, West Point first responders, Lima-Tioga, West Point and Carthage fire departments and Hancock County Coroner's Office.
