Schulte qualifies for state tennis tournament

Published: Friday, May 16, 2008 1:12 PM CDT
FAIRFIELD - Keokuk junior Katie Schulte qualified for the IGHSAU Class 1A State State Singles Tennis Tournament for the second consecutive year Thursday.

Schulte finished second at the regional tournament held at Fairfield High School. She took Fairfield junior Rachele Petit, the regional's top seed, to a third set before an ankle injury forced her to retire at 5-5 in the third set.

Keokuk Head Coach Mark Marsot said that Schulte did not break her ankle and will begin treatments today. The 1A state tournament is May 29-30 at Luther College in Decorah.

If Schulte is unable to go due to the injury, Keokuk junior Lindsay Nash would be the alternate based on her third place finish Thursday.

Schulte cruised through her first three matches to reach the finals. She opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Fairfield's Olivia Bachar, defeated Centerville's Melanie Hermon 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, and Davis County's Whitney Thompson 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Petit won the first set from Schulte 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) and led the second set 3-0. Schulte, however, battled back and took the second set 7-5.

“Katie just battled back the whole time against Petit,” Marsot said. “She fought hard. I've never seen a girl put forth more heart and determination in a tennis match. Her heart and determination carried her through.”

Schulte served for the win at 5-4 in the third set. She had a match point, but a close call on the line didn't go her way. Petit eventually broke to tie the set at 5-5, and Schulte suffered the injury in the next game.

Nash limped through her final match, but defeated Thompson 6-3, 6-0 to claim third place.

It was an impressive day for the junior playing her first season of high school tennis. She defeated Clarke's Kristi McCann 6-0, 6-1 and Chariton's Jamie Allen 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semifinals.

Petit defeated Nash in two tough sets. Petit advanced to the finals with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win.

“Lindsay took Petit to the limit,” Marsot said. “She played the best tennis she has played all year, and that is all you can ask for.”

The Keokuk doubles teams fell in the opening round.

Abby Welborn and Cally Schulte took the second set, but fell in three to a team from Clarke 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Erin Uhlmeyer and Ashley Longshore lost to Centerville's Heather Buttel and Allison Berner 6-0, 6-1.

Buttel and Berner went on to the regional doubles title by defeating Maharishi's Bonnie Carter and Sheila Higgins 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.

Keokuk will face Camanche in the Class 1A team tennis semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday at Davenport Assumption High School.
