Amanda Helmick enjoys reading

Amanda Helmick works at Fazes Consignment Shop in Keokuk and is a student at Western Illinois University, Macomb, majoring in fashion merchandising and management.

She has lived near Central Lee School, rural Donnellson, all her life and attended Central Lee Schools. Helmick also attended Southeastern Community College for two years before transferring to WIU. She just returned from a fashion study tour in New York City.

What food are you most famous for? Cookies and brownies.

What kind of music do you enjoy? Country, Christian and top 40.

What are your hobbies? Shopping, reading and walking my dog.

Do you have a favorite pet (present or past)? Jassmine, my dog. She turned 12 years old on May 26.


Where would you go if you won a trip anywhere in the world and why? Paris, because it is the center of the fashion world and Egypt because I want to see the pyramids.

What has been life's most rewarding experience for you? I enjoy my job. It gives me good customer service experience and I get to design the window displays.

How many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren do you have? None.

What book are you currently reading? “Silent Selling: Best Practices and Effective Strategies in Visual Merchandising” by Judith Bell and Kate Ternus.

What is your least favorite food? Soda pop.

What is your favorite food? Chocolate ice cream.

What makes a perfect summer day and how would you spend it if you could, anyway you wanted? A sunny day lounging in my hammock, reading a book.

Have a favorite sport to do or watch? I don't do sports.

Favorite childhood, teen and adult book? “Gone with the Wind,” “Scarlett” and “Rhett Butler's People.”

Most memorable moment? Completing the Disney college program in January 2007.

Most famous person(s) you've met? Niki Livas, the designer of Zum Zum, a prom dress line.

What do you do for fun? Shop, go to the movie theater and attend plays, being outside and attending auctions.

What do you like most about yourself? I have a good memory, I am organized and have attention to details.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A florist.

What do you collect? Ice cream dishes and miniature fashion accessories.

Where would you live if you had a choice? Closer to the city.

What is your favorite TV show and actor/actress? Julia Roberts.

If you could have dinner with any three people (living or dead) who would they be? My great-grandma Florence Rempe, Clark Gable and Salvatore Ferragamo.

What was your favorite subject in school? It's a toss up between history or math.

What was your first job? Environmental aide at the Donnellson Health Center.

What was/is your favorite style/piece of clothing? Dresses because they are the easiest way to achieve instant style.

Best word(s) of advice you've received? Be yourself, stand for something, and never give up.

Favorite movie of all time? “Gone with the Wind.”

What is your favorite ethnic food? Italian.

Person you admire most and why? My mom because she inspires me to try new things.

If you had a motto, what would it be? Define your signature style.

What is your favorite recipe (list directions and ingredients)? Helmickville sugar cookies.

Helmickville sugar cookies

Ingredients:

2 cups granulated white sugar

1 cup butter

2 eggs

2 teaspoons dark vanilla

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 teaspoons baking soda

4 Tablespoons dark vinegar

1 cup sour cream

4 to 5 cups of flour

Directions

Mix the sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla and vinegar in bowl. Mix the baking soda into the sour cream then add to the mixture.

Add baking powder. Stir in flour slowly.

Let dough chill overnight in the refrigerator. Roll out dough and use favorite cookie cutter. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.

Let cool, then ice and add decorations.
