Donations needed for July 4 fireworks

By Steve Dunn/Gate City Managing Editor
Published: Monday, June 9, 2008 2:46 PM CDT
The City of Keokuk is seeking donations in order to have a fireworks show at this year's Fourth of July celebration in Rand Park.

In the past few years, Mayor David Gudgel has raised the necessary funds to have fireworks. This year, he turned the job over to the city council's Finance/Personnel Subcommittee chaired by Doug Matlick.

Letters signed by Matlick and fellow committee members Susan Dunek and Justin Tuck soliciting contributions for the fireworks were included with this month's water bills.

Last year's fireworks show cost about $7,000, according to Lennie Etter, who produced the pyrotechnics.

Donations for this year's fireworks show should be sent to Keokuk City Hall, 415 Blondeau St., Keokuk, IA 52632.

Once again, a full day of activities is scheduled during Keokuk's Fourth of July celebration. A coed volleyball tournament at the tennis court in Rand Park is a new event this year, according to Charles Belba, president of the Keokuk Park and Recreation Advisory Board.

To sign up for the tournament, contact Annette Peevler at City Hall. Only a certain number of teams will be taken, and some of the slots have been filled already. A captain's meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m., followed by the tournament starting at 9 a.m.

A disc golf tournament will start at 8:30 a.m. in the park. There is a small charge for the volleyball tournament and disc golf tournament. There are no charges for any other activities.

Children's events will start at noon and go throughout the day. Each contestant must provide their own equipment for the bicycle, tricycle and scooter races.

There are two new activities for children this year - a watermelon eating contest and pizza box carry.

McNamara's Band will kick off the musical entertainment at 11 a.m. The evening musical entertainment will start at 6:30 p.m. and end about a half hour before the fireworks show.

Food vendors will be open at noon. The Athletic Center also will set up at noon to sell commemorative shirts as well as shirts and hats. A jumping castle from Lil Angels Preschool will be available, too.

A karaoke contest will be held at the flower garden gazebo from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 2 p.m. There are four age groups for the contest: zero to 11, 12 to 25, 26 to 40 and 41 and over.

A children's parade will be held at 10 a.m., starting and Triangle Park and ending at Rand Park. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. No large entries are allowed. Wagons also can be decorated and entered.

People interested in serving as a volunteer during the celebration should call Belba at 524-0971.

" HEY, I have an idea, why don't these council people get back our $8,000 in tax dollars that they freely gave to ODIS JONES (REMEMBER HIM?) to move here -- the money he did not return even though he never set up residency here.
These are the EXACT SAME FOLKS who wasted our dollars on ODIS, who are going to SAVE US MONEY on our garbage pickup by raising our rates, whe brought us GARY THE GARDENER who, one would think could find the money in his parks budget for this given the expert DUNEK/MATLICK claims he is, and our now asking us to trust us with our donations to fund fireworks. GET READY TO SPEND $7,500 TO WATCH SIX SPARKLERS FROM DOLLAR GENERAL GET LIT AND THEN WE WILL BE TOLD THAT THIS IS THE GREATEST 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION WE HAVE EVER SEEN? Are you kidding?
GOD BLESS KEOKUK as we need it with these guys spending us into bankruptcy . "
