By Diane Vance/Gate City Staff Writer
Kim Hartweg of Hamilton, Ill., has been hired by the Keokuk School District as the elementary principal at George Washington School. She will begin July 1 with a one-year contract at $74,000. She is a professor of mathematics at Western Illinois University.
She earned her Ph.D. in administration at the University of Iowa.
Since 1999 Hartweg has taught WIU education majors about teaching math.
Prior to her work as a math professor, Hartweg served as the assistant to the dean for technology at WIU. She was responsible for training 15 departments in subjects varying from instructional design to electronic classroom instruction.
“I spent 10 years teaching at the elementary level and 10 years at WIU,” she said. “I am up for a different challenge. I'm excited about getting to work with teachers at George Washington.
“I've been teaching students who want to become teachers. I loved working with those students in their practicum of teaching math. Teachers are such hard workers. They are creative and really want to help their students to learn. Teachers are highly motivated and fun to work with.”
Hartweg's K-12 classroom experience includes two years of K-8 Title I reading and math instruction and teaching eight years of math, reading and social studies in the Hamilton School District.
Hartweg's husband, Brad, farms in rural Hamilton and is an electrician. They have three children; Austin is a sophomore at Illinois State University, Jacey will be a freshman at Hamilton High School and Chase will begin third grade.
Tim Patterson had served as principal at Washington.
“We welcome Kim Hartweg to our Keokuk Community School District educational team,” said Superintendent Jane Babcock.
