Keokuk area residents will have an opportunity to celebrate the United States' 232nd birthday with a wide range of activities at Rand Park on Friday.
This year's Fourth of July extravaganza will feature games, a kids' parade from Triangle Park to Rand Park, music by McNamara's Band and TNT, the Keokuk Fire Department's mist truck, a jumping castle, contests and fireworks.
The ages for the kids' contests are 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12. The ages for the karaoke contest from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. are zero to 11, 12 to 25, 26 to 40 and 41 and over.
This year, the Keokuk City Council raised funds for the fireworks show staged by Lennie Etter, a retired Keokuk police officer.
Friday's activities start with a disc golf tournament at 8:30 a.m., followed by a coed volleyball tournament at 9 a.m. and a kids' parade at 10 a.m., starting at Triangle Park.
McNamara's Band will play at 11 a.m., and the concession area will open at noon. The fire department's mist truck will keep the public cool from noon to 5 p.m, while the jumping castle will entertain children from noon to 6 p.m.
Bicycle, tricycle and scooter races will start at noon. Participants should provide their own equipment.
The cookie stacking contest will get under way at 1 p.m. RaeAnn School of Dance will provide entertainment at 2 p.m. A watermelon eating contest will begin at 3 p.m. A new activity, a pizza box carry, will start at 4 p.m.
The evening musical entertainment with TNT will begin at 6:30 p.m. The fireworks show will light up the night sky as soon as it gets dark about 9:30 p.m.
Donnellson
Donnellson's annual Fourth of July parade begins at 6 p.m. Friday, celebrating with the theme, “America the Beautiful - Right Here in Donnellson, Iowa.”
The parade lines up at Maple and Oak streets and proceeds up Highway 218, turns west on Fruit Street past Fairview Housing, turns north past the Donnellson Health Center then east on State Street, ending at the IDOT maintenance shed/headquarters.
Donnellson Lions and Chapter CK of TTT will sponsor an ice cream social after the parade in the Pilot Grove Savings Bank community room. Sandwiches, homemade pie, ice cream and drinks will be available.
Registration for parade entries is from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at the parade start area, St. Pauls' United Church of Christ corner.
The categories include: two children's categories, ages up to 7 years and 8-12 years old, family unit, religious, patriotic, organizations, commercial or advertising, political, horses and miscellaneous.
Musical groups or small bands are encouraged to participate.
Entries registered by 5:30 p.m. Friday will compete for prizes. The grand prize is $35 awarded to the entry displaying creativity, depiction of the parade theme, neatness and overall general appearance.
First prize is $25, second prize is $15 and third prize is $10.
Businesses, organizations, classic cars, antique tractors, etc., also are welcome.
All entries should be decorated.
Entries are encouraged to hand-out treats other than candy such as small American flags, balloons, patriotic streamers, whistles or pencils.
The parade is sponsored by the Central Lee Sports Boosters and Central Lee Music Boosters.
Hancock County, Ill.
Hancock County, Ill., will celebrate the Fourth of July with lots of entertainment on Friday, a street dance Saturday and community worship on Sunday in Carthage, Ill.
This year's schedule begins at 6:30 a.m. Friday with a pancake and sausage breakfast sponsored by the Women Working Together group. Then at 9 a.m., there is music by Tom Roush, followed by the parade at 10 a.m. that begins on Main Street, encircles three sides of the square and then turns down Adams Street to pass by Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage.
Entries for the parade should register at Bilderback/McDonald trucking, located at 1200 East Main, Carthage. After the parade, Tom Roush entertains again. Those who missed his show before the parade can stay and catch him after the parade.
At noon, presentation of colors by the Carthage VFW and American Legion is immediately followed by the Carthage Community Chorus on the stage.
At 12:30 p.m., hypnotist Cheryl Dudley of the Chicago area will entertain everyone. The Talent Team from Center Stage will take the stage at 1:30 p.m., and the children's pedal tractor pull begin at 2 p.m.
In addition, the Carthage Fire Department will hold its traditional water fight at 2 p.m.
Throughout the day on the Carthage square, there will be craft and food vendors. At dusk, around 8:30 p.m., the action moves to Illini West High School football field on Miller Street in Carthage for a free fireworks display.
“The Fourth of July activities have something for everyone to enjoy so come early, don't forget to bring your lawn chair and find a comfortable place to sit, and spend the day on the square,” said Dawn Hellyer, secretary of the Carthage Chamber of Commerce.
On Saturday, there is a street dance on the south side of the courtyard square in Carthage. The gates open at 7 p.m.; the cost is $5. The band “TNT,” known for playing classic rock for all ages, begins at 7:30 p.m. and continues to midnight.
“Between 500 and 700 people have attended past street dances, and this year promises to be just as much fun,” said Matt Dickinson, dance committee member. Those entering the gate must be 21 years old; there will be alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages served, with free soda to designated drivers. Food is available by Sly Fox.
The Hancock County Fourth of July celebration will end with a community church service on the square at 8 a.m. Sunday.
