The Iowa Department of Labor presented T.O. Haas Tire, Keokuk, with a Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program Award on June 25.
This award, regulated by the Occupational Safety and Hazards Agency, recognizes small employers who operate an exemplary safety and health management system.
“T.O. Haas Tire and the Iowa Department of Labor have two vitally important resources: tires/vehicle services and the people who do the work to provide it,” said Joe Mullen of OSHA, Des Moines. “Employee health and safety is critical to getting our work done.”
Corporate management and the T.O. Haas owner traveled from Lincoln, Neb., to Keokuk for the award presentation.
“We've been working hard on reaching SHARP certification status for more than two years,” said Fred Knight, T.O. Haas Tire marketing manager in Lincoln. “We've identified hazards in the workplace and corrected them. We strive to improve our safety and health management system and programs. We have worked to reduce injury and illness.
“We applied for this certification, sharing our information about injuries on the job. This is a big deal for T.O. Haas Tire for several reasons.”
n Keokuk is the first store in the T.O. Haas Tire chain to earn the award.
n Only two other employers in Iowa participate in the safety-and-health recognition program at this level.
“This certification is very important because of what it says about our commitment to employees and customers,” said Knight. “In order to stay in the program, we have to be recertified each year. The bottom line is that each and every day we want employees to go home to their families safe and healthy.”
Mullen said only businesses where management commits to safety and includes employee involvement will achieve this level of safety.
“Safety adds value to the company and the business becomes a leader in its industry,” said Mullen.
Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce also presented a plaque to T.O. Haas in recognition of the business's expansion and paving its large parking lot.
“This makes a huge impact on the way into town,” Mayor David Gudgel said to store manager David Grogan. “This is a very nice looking business. When Mike (Hickey, contractor who poured the concrete parking lot) told me what you were doing here, I thought it was great. I'm also hoping it will be contagious to other businesses up and down the street.”
T.O. Haas and Keokuk High School Little Feathers served lunch to celebrate the day with customers.
