Plane crashes in Carthage, pilot sustains minor injuries

CARTHAGE, Ill. - A crop duster plane crashed Friday afternoon at the old Carthage Airport while taking off, resulting in minor injuries to the pilot and a hazardous material spill.
Larry Wright, 64, Headwind, Texas, lost control of the 1976 plane during take off, skidded off the runway, traveled through a small section of a corn field and came to rest in a grass waterway, said Hancock County Sheriff John Jefferson.
The pilot was treated at the scene by Carthage Memorial Hospital EMS.
The plane, which received extensive damage, was transporting about 240 gallons of a water-Proaxis insecticide, Stragego fungicide and slow release nitrogen mix.
The mixture spilled onto the ground at the crash site where it was contained.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Hancock County Emergency Services Disaster Agency, Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Carthage Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
The accident remains under investigation.
