The ninth annual South Lee County Relay for Life is Friday and Saturday at First Christian Church, 3476 Main St., Keokuk.

The community is invited to come out and buy food and drinks, honor and celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have died. Friday evening will have entertainment, ceremonies and games.

Funds raised go the American Cancer Society for research.

Usually set in Rand Park, this year's event will have at least one member from each team walking the course throughout the night in the church parking lot. Last summer's relay was stormed out in Rand Park and continued weeks later at First Christian Church.

Food tents open at 4 p.m. Survivor registration begins at 4:30 p.m. in the church's Fellowship Hall.

A Survivors Picnic is from 5 to 6 p.m. Kevin Hardcastle will lead a survivor's prayer and Rae Ann's School of Dance will perform.

Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. with Bob Wagner leading a prayer. Master of ceremonies is Mike Beaird.

American Legion Post 41 will present the flags. Joy Jairl will sing the national anthem.

Retired state representative Phil Wise will give a special thank you. The official Relay for Life torch will be lit and Jim Worrell will introduce the survivors.

Survivors will walk one lap of the course, then caregivers will walk a lap.

Nicole Ginsberg will perform special music.

Beaird will recognize Relay sponsors and introduce the 2008 Relay for Life teams. The teams will then parade around the course. After the parade, walking laps will begin.

At 7:15 p.m. Glenda's Studio of Dance will perform.

The Luminaria Ceremony begins at dusk with Sylvia Tillman, Beaird and Mike Shea reading out the names of those honored and remembered with a luminaria. Walkers will have a silent lap in honor.

Team games are scheduled from 1 to 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

A sunrise ceremony will be celebrated at 5:30 a.m. and the 2008 Relay for Life concludes at 6 a.m. Saturday.
