AMES - Keokuk's James Vandenberg tossed four touchdown passes including one to Central Lee's Wes McGraw as the South defeated the North 41-0 Saturday in the Iowa Shrine Bowl.
Vandenberg completed 17 of 25 passed for 241 yards with no interceptions.
It was the most lop-sided Shrine game ever, and the 41 points scored by the South tied the record for most scored by one team.
Vandenberg, who is headed to the University of Iowa, completed a 19-yard TD pass to Marc Baumert of Council Bluffs St. Albert, a 2-yard scoring pass to Steven Staggs of Oskaloosa and a 35-yard TD pass to Jerred Herring of Burlington as well as a 3-yard scoring strike to McGraw.
Vandenberg had to play the whole game as the South's other quarterback, Tyler Peschong of Marshalltown, was playing in the 4A state baseball tournament in Des Moines Saturday night.
The South helped themselves defensively with six interceptions, including three by Garrett Scott of Bettendorf, who is going to the University of Northern Iowa.
The South led 14-0 at halftime and then stopped the North's first four drives of the second half with interceptions. Shane Pudenz of Carroll, Alex Klopfenstein of Washington and Troy Ticknor of ADM also had interceptions.
North quarterbacks Brett Watkins of Waterloo Columbus and Daniel Schmall of Cedar Rapids Xavier completed a total of three of 15 passes. Two of the completions were for no yards.
The players for the game are selected by a process of nomination by coaches, ballots by statewide sports media and official invitations from representatives of the Iowa Shrine Bowl.
To date, the Iowa Shrine Bowl has raised more than $2 million for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. There are 19 orthopedic hospitals in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Hawaii.
