Keokuk High School Little Feathers qualified at summer camp to compete in the Universal Dance Association competition and perform in the Capital One Bowl in Florida.

Seniors on the squad also qualified to march in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Little Feathers attended a UDA camp at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill., last week.

The UDA camp is a different camp than the Feathers have attended in the past three years, said director Lulu Huston.

“This camp has a four-day, intensive and individualized curriculum,” she said. “The Feathers have been practicing since June to prepare a home routine performance for the first night of camp.”

The home routine was evaluated on showmanship, choreography, execution and technique.

The Little Feathers received a third place trophy in the small varsity division. This trophy qualified the Feathers to attend the UDA National Competition in Florida.

Each girl learned three routines at camp for evaluation. The girls were evaluated on their showmanship and memory and received a blue, red or white ribbon based on their performance for each routine.

Little Feathers received a superior trophy based the ribbons they received. The superior trophy qualifies the squad to attend the Capital One Bowl in Florida, in addition to the UDA National Competition.

The 2008-2009 Little Feather Squad includes six seniors: MacKenzie Grogan, Nikki Kelly, Abby Kline, Schuyler Pfaffe, Kealoha Proctor and Kacey Swainey; two juniors, Selena Stair and Mikayla White; four sophomores, Thea Dennis, Kelsie Kraus, Keegan Pfaffe and Morgan Stamper; and two freshmen, Alysha Hymes and Caylie Mueller.

“It's my belief that the best thing you can do as a squad is attend camp,” said Huston.

“It brings the squad together. It gives them a wonderful experience which they will always share.

“They learn to work together and support one another. Our 10 month season is long and we need an experience like camp to bring us together and carry us through.

“I am extremely proud of each and everyone of these girls for how they represented Keokuk and how hard they worked,” said Huston. “I'm thankful for the leadership exhibited by some of the girls and also the compassion they showed for each other.”
