FM Area Arts Association features Denmark artisan
For the Daily Gate City
FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison Area Arts Association is reopening at a new location after having been displaced on June 14 from the Burlington Northern depot by the Flood of 2008.
The FMAAA was able to evacuate most of the organization's possessions in two days. The fine art was salvaged first and only took a few transport losses.
The association's new gallery address is 825 Avenue G, Fort Madison, and will feature the pottery of Iowa resident Linda Ross, Denmark, this month.
A reception will be held for Ross from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Ross began Chestnut Hill Pottery more than 20 years ago along the Skunk River near Denmark. The pottery's name comes from more than 40 chestnut trees that the family grew from seed on the property.
Ross creates unique nature pieces for the home and garden and specializes in slab-built, wheel thrown, and sculptural pottery with both stoneware and earthenware clays.
Items are microwave and oven proof, dishwasher safe, and contain no lead.
Several years ago she began nurturing an interest in glass. She makes glass beads with a torch that she incorporates into her pottery.
Marble making has become a hobby as well as weaving, felting and silver work.
Ross is working with a group to establish the Southeast Iowa Regional Studio tour.
“We need to support the local community artists, otherwise we will disappear,” Ross said. “With all the products made these days in China, it becomes harder for handcrafted wares to compete. It's tough; I've recently had to take a second job. I rely on art fair income and the weather has severely disrupted the circuit this year.”
Ross does 10 to 12 art fairs per year within a several hour radius from Chestnut Hill.
Bartlett Instruments is the sponsor for the Fort Madison exhibition.
