HAMILTON, Ill. - George Allen Hamburger Sr., 77, of Hamilton, Ill., died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, in the V.A. Hospital, Knoxville.
He was born on June 12, 1931, in Keokuk, the son of Charles Aaron and Theresa Keim Hamburger.
He married Nellie Joean Pilcher on Jan. 31, 1953, in St. Louis, Mo. She preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 2008.
Survivors include: six children, George Allen (Peggy) Hamburger Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah, Maria Jacqueline (Terry) Jackson of Marshall, Ark., James Arthur (Sue) Hamburger of Lee's Summit, Mo., Diana Josette (Steve) Davis of Hamilton, Renita Janell (Steve) Day of Keokuk, and Vicki Jo (Pat) Fountain of Hamilton; 15 grandchildren, Michael McAfee, Wade Hansen, Melissa Walton, Tara Walton, Angel Solak, Jason Turpin, Terry “T.J.” Jackson, Cassie Jackson, Tiffany Sturms, Heather Long, Corey Long, Jacob Davis, Matthew Davis, Steven “Danny” Day and Summer Day; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Sam Edward (Marsha) Hamburger of Maxwell; two sisters, Margaret Ann (Jack) Stephenson of Keokuk and Nancy Ryan of Madrid; and a son-in-law, Michael McAfee of Hannibal, Mo.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carol Joean McAfee; two sisters, Ruth Darlene Stephenson and Dorothy Hamburger; and a brother, Charles Raymond Hamburger.
He attended school in Keokuk. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Hamilton VFW Post and the Hamilton Jaycees. He had worked at Steel Castings in Keokuk, retiring after 36 years. He was a member of United Steelworkers of America.
He enjoyed hunting, traveling, playing cards and watching wrestling.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo, Ill.
He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lamporte - St.Clair Funeral Home, Hamilton, with the Rev. Lee Wiley officiating.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton with full military honors at the graveside by Hamilton VFW Post 5256.
Visitation is after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends between 6 and 8 p.m.

I doubt very much that anyone in the family would know me. I did Time and Motion Study for Keokuk steel Castings back in the mid 1960s.
George was one of the best, if not the best, finish grinder during the years I was there in Keokuk. I enjoyed working with him.
