Science laboratory remodeling among Hamilton's goals

By Cindy Iutzi/Gate City Staff Writer

HAMILTON, Ill. - The Hamilton School Board and district administration came up with several ambitious short and long term goals during their Aug. 6 planning retreat.

The first goal is to remodel the high school science labs “to provide a more meaningful experience for our students,” according to Superintendent Dr. James Jackson's interpretation of the board's decisions.

The anticipated completion date is Sept. 1, 2009. Responsibility for carrying through on the project would be assumed by Jackson and High School Principal Ron Gilbert.

Jackson noted the following tasks as necessary to complete the goal: Contact an architect to review current architectural drawings; revise drawings as necessary; bid millwork (cabinetry, etc.) as a separate job; let bids by March 1, 2009; approve bids and select contractor; begin work on millwork by April 1, 2009; begin renovation by June 1, 2009.

The project segments - millwork, classroom remodeling and final punch lists - would be complete and integrated by Aug. 15, 2009.

Jackson already has met with an architect with Architechnics in Quincy, Ill., and will arrange for the board to meet with him.

Darin Prost of Architechnics told Jackson that the millwork and construction could be bid out separately. The construction could be completed while the cabinetry was being assembled off-site and then installed in the completed classrooms.

“He said three months is reasonable for a project of that size,” Jackson said.

Jackson added that the district would need to decide “where the rest of the money is going to come from.”

Later in the meeting, board member Mark Menn said he believes funding should be secured before the project begins.

In related construction matters, Jackson said the district will need to resolve 14 life-safety infractions this year.

The second goal calls for Jackson and the building principals, Gilbert and Elementary Principal David Snowden, to develop a long range staff development plan for certified staff members.

The plan would include the use of technology and improving classroom instruction.

A survey of the certified staff would be conducted to pinpoint staff development needs, establish staff development-need priorities, align the endeavor with the Local Professional Development Committee, and coordinate development activities between the elementary and junior high/high school.

A follow-up survey then would be administered to see if needs were adequately met.

Staff development is ongoing.

The third goal relates to development of a plan by Jackson and district principals to pass an education referendum during the 2010 school year.

The administration has determined that a $1increase in the tax rate would suffice for 10 years of operation. Securing funding - no district resources can be used - and finding a person to coordinate the referendum and committees will be among the first tasks.

Brochure preparation, sample letters and town meetings would be ways to get information about the referendum to taxpayers.

The fourth goal is to develop a plan to improve communications with area media and enhance positive facets of the district.

An area media list will be put together to facilitate news sharing, principals will be asked to contact at least one media outlet each month, a parent newsletter will be sent home with good-news stories, the district Web page will be updated and a monthly internal newsletter will be circulated to keep the district up-to-date about important events.

In other matters during the meeting, the board:

Agreed to allow the Titan pom squad to perform at the Outback Bowl in Florida. The girls are raising their own funds which, with airfare, will amount to about $1,500 each.

Learned the district has five new buses running bus routes.

Learned the toilets in the concession stand are working.

Was updated on progress at the baseball field. Dirt is being removed in the infield in order to eliminate rocks that were dumped when fill was moved from a highway construction site to the field. The board ultimately decided to buy a porous barrier to keep deeply buried rocks from coming to the surface. The barrier is estimated to cost $2,100 to $3,000.

Decided to study whether the district should opt out of state hold harmless funding.

Will review the newly updated board policy book with an eye to adopting it in September.

The board also met for about two hours in closed session Wednesday to discuss personnel. The board returned to open session and took the following actions:

Accepted the resignation of Krys Eversden-Duesterhaus, elementary resource teacher.

Released April Anderson, high school math teacher.

Released Robert Gerhardt, bus driver.

Hired Angela Huckstep of Mendon, Ill., as high school math teacher.

Hired Glenn Fernetti as junior high one-on-one special education aide and named him assistant Titan football coach.

Hired Candy Berquam as at-risk pre-school teacher.

Hired Brook Dadant as elementary resource teacher.

Hired Belinda Cox as elementary one-on-one special education aide.

Rehired Linda Brown as one-on-one special education aide.

Hired Judy Melton as Titan cross country coach.

Hired Stephanie Noble as junior high girls basketball coach.

Hired Marty Hall as assistant junior high school girls basketball coach.

Hired Bill Knowles as assistant Titan golf coach.

" I also feel sorry for this women. What a first impression to get the first week of a new job. I heard he had turned down a job also which is really sad. They would of both had to resign in order for the jobs to be posted. I think it is probably Hamiltons way of trying to cover up another debacle in which they don't want to look like idiots. How sad that these people are running their school system and dealing with kids on a daily basis. I know that he would be a great coach and wants to do what is best for the kids. I would have to tell them what to do with the job. "

" Another Warsaw Resident is right - lets have Ralph take over since he seems to know so much! Hamilton's consistent blunder entertainment - one hand not knowing what the other is doing - would be funny if they weren't doing it with people who are interested in doing what's best for the kids. I heard Marty had turned down another coaching opportunity in Keokuk because he was told he'd be the jh coach and then they go and do this - what is with that place??? Maybe they're having to re-advertise the jobs in order to re-hire them with a switch? Will the board have to vote on this all over again? I bet marty will still coach them if asked bc he wants to do what's best and important for the overall jh/sh program but it's sad he has to put up with Hamilton admins to do it. I feel sorry for the new lady too walking into all this mess! "

Another Warsaw Resident wrote on Aug 30, 2008 8:21 AM:

" I see where both the junior high jobs are listed on one of the job search networks. Does this mean they both told them they didn't want the jobs? I honestly don't know why they would even consider working for them after this fiasco. Maybe Ralph Ciser should apply since he knows so much about everyone. "

concerned parent wrote on Aug 27, 2008 3:20 PM:

" I have just found out that Hamilton might try to get a company to come in and take over the lunch program. What is the school boards problem. It's just what we need to lay off the kitchen staff that we have and replace them with a company that doesn't even care obout our district. I'm sure the lunch prices will go up more, and they have already had to raise them because they say they are losing money. Is this the opinion of all the board members or just a few of them who no longer have children in the district and won't be affected by the raise. You want people to move into our district but you are going to take the jobs of all the women in the kitchen. Lets get real and take care of what we have. The kids like the crew in the kitchen because they really care about the children. Lets get together as a community and put a stop to this . "

Disgusted wrote on Aug 27, 2008 8:47 AM:

" Again Ralph, you act like you know something when you don't. It was a reduction with other teachers moving up from Jr. High and elementary. A few weeks later another Elementary teacher left and opened up a position, so the other teachers slid back down to their original positions. Mr. Hall had already accepted another job and did not seek to come back to Warsaw. Maybe you should ask and not assume you know everything. "

Another Warsaw Resident wrote on Aug 27, 2008 8:10 AM:

" Ralph Ciser, what is your deal? Most people know the Superintendent was the reason he was let go. It wasn't because he wasn't a good teacher or the kids didn't like him. I wouldn't put it past her as she is another one that does what she wants and uses her title to get the results. She doesn't care aboout the kids or how things effect them. She didn't want the co-op and I am 100% positive that she had something to do with him getting let go. For your information I have asked several sources and they are all to scared to tell the truth. They are hypocrytes who say what they think you want to hear and then turn around and tell the higher ups what they want to hear to keep their jobs. That is probably why you believe your source. It's pretty sad that people can't stand up for themselves and what they believe in. Those who do like Mr. Hall end up on the short end of the stick. I have seen it happen time and time again. I have to agree with Warsaw grad in that you have an ax to grind with Mr. Hall. You obviously don't have a kid that was taught or coached by him or you would know that the kids really do like him. My daughter loved him as a teacher and learned more from him as a coach than she ever has in any sport. "

Disgusted Also wrote on Aug 27, 2008 12:03 AM:

" Thank you Warsaw Grad - you are right. The article states goal 4 as being to "improve communications with area media"...the media reports what it sees. Seems like there's a long way to go at Hamilton - they need better decision making and less game-playing with people's lives and positions to ever have any improved communications with their own community, much less the media. When shenanigans like this recent jh girls coaching hiring and others are continueing to happen, how can they expect to get any good press?? For all we know, the school board may not have even been aware that Mr. Hall was told he had the job - so they were just going on the last minute recommendation put in front of them by the administration... Just sad that the kids are losing out on a great person and good coach. As for the science facilities, the jh science teacher has been told the last 3 years that she will get improvements as in more room for labs,etc..and it hasn't happened yet...I think it was even a story on the tv news at the time, but of course it never actually happened - just made for a good story at the time. If Hamilton wants better press in the area then they need to quit doing things that cause them not to be trusted with their own community and others in the area. "

Ralph Ciser wrote on Aug 26, 2008 6:49 PM:

" Disgusted: Like I said ask the source, your Warsaw Grad is very close to teh answer. The SUPER did fire him. If it was Reduction the position would not have been advertised as the exat same postion to be filled thefollowing year! You cannot assume you have to ask. "

disgusted parent wrote on Aug 26, 2008 12:57 PM:

" I totally agree with the problem of the overcrowded classrooms. I have a daughter in one of those classes, which includes 26 children. The children were split into smaller classes for second grade, but now are forced to be in a crowded 3rd grade room. I think the school should really think about how the children are learning in that situation. It has to be harder for the children who need the extra help to be in such a big class. They cetainly can't get the extra help with that many students in a class like they did in 2nd grade. I hope the school will do something about this situation, and not have to have the children learning in such big classes next year in fourth grade too. "

Warsaw Grad wrote on Aug 26, 2008 10:11 AM:

" Ralph, I'm not sure you know what you are talking about. Mr. Hall was let go at Warsaw because of the Superintendant. When he left we gathered a petition of over 240 student signatures. I know I never had a teacher I liked better or learned more from. You sound like a person with an ax to grind against Mr. Hall. Maybe he didn't play your baby girl enough last year or something. What satisfactory answer did you get? We would all like to know. My guess is you didn't even talk with anyone, just wanted to get on here and bash someone you don't like. Also explain if you would exactly how being in the building during the school day makes you a better coach. I'm baffled on that one. Silly me, I thought what you did at practice and your knowledge of the game is what mattered. There is no doubt Mr. Hall is a good coach and would do a great job with the Jr. high girls team from Hamilton. Just a note to clarify, this absolutely not a bash on Mrs. Noble. She may be a great person and a good coach. This is about the administration promising something and not following through. BTW, I did go to the source and asked Mr. Hall if it was true. He said he was asked to take the jr. high job in May and agreed. He said he had talked with both Mr. Dion and Mr. Gilbert about the position and both had told him it was his job and to go find his own assistant. To close I would just say Mr. Hall is a great guy and would do a good job and it's a shame the administrations of both Warsaw and Hamilton continue to play games with people's lives like they are God or something. "

Disgusted wrote on Aug 26, 2008 7:59 AM:

" Ralph Ciser, evidently you and your source neither one have a clue. He didn't get fired, there was a reduction in force and he had the least seniority. Funny that every student in the school signed a petition to try and get him rehired. Think about what you are saying having someone there for the kids everyday. He was there 1/2 the summer working with the junior high girls in preparation for the job that they told him he would get. Think about the coaches that don't teach in Hamilton but are still employed as coaches. Schuster, Batley, Hendricks, just to name a few. They aren't there everyday but still coach. I know that he would definitely be there for the kids and has proved that time and time again. "

" Coach Capaldo's cart is his cart, he paid for it and paid to have it painted and lettered.

I know, I painted and lettered it.... "

Ralph Ciser wrote on Aug 25, 2008 4:44 PM:

" To: Disgusted,
Stop whining -
Ask Marty Hall how compentent he is when he got fired from Warsaw as a history teacher. We need some one who can be there for our kids in the building and on a daily basis. Would'nt you want your daughter to have someone there for her. I highly doubt he was promised anything. If your so upset go ask the source and reveal you concerns directly. I did and got a satisfactory answer. Anyone can blow smoke from their keyboard! So go ask and get undisgusted. "

Hamilton grad wrote on Aug 25, 2008 3:26 PM:

" Once again, our school board is an embarrassment. Oh, we have 14 life safety violations we should probably look at this year. Duh! We need to improve our facilities so we can at least have the West Hancock middle school in a couple years. A referendum should not even be discussed until the pros and cons of consolidating with Warsaw is discussed. We are already behilnd Nauvoo and Warsaw on this issue. We need to look at what is best for the students and set aside our parochial pride. "

Titan Golf Cart wrote on Aug 25, 2008 2:27 PM:

" If you are refering to the Titan golf cart that the football team has, Coach Capaldo paid for that out of his own pocket. "

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:08 PM:

" Hamilton is not about the education of our children. They say there is no money but where did the golf cart came from, was it FREE. Why did they spend all that money remodeling the offices, if there is no money. Seem to me like the money is there if the big guys want it. Lets all get a better look at the budget and ask just where the money is going. "

Disgusted Also wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:09 AM:

" What Disgusted has said is exactly right - but I've been seeing things that are done so ridiculous at Hamilton for so long that I just say..What can you expect??? It's Hamilton!! Why any district would tell one person they are hired for the job back in June and then do such a 180 AT the board meeting is just another reason the Hamilton Sch District is looked at with disgust. There is NO WAY these people are looking out for the girls and the good of the program, I really hope Mr. Hall tells them to stick it because that is totally unprofessional to do what they did to him.....and ya know?? I think you're exactly right when you say they are still pouting bc the only way that co-op went through to start with is the parents got so involved, so possibly this is considered "payback"...but who's really losing out here??? Oh yeah, once again, the kids!!! "

Bigger issues wrote on Aug 24, 2008 12:55 AM:

" I am sorry but I think that Hamilton has bigger issues on there hands....how about over crowded class rooms that children are already having a hard time learning it because there are 25-26 per class not to mention that there is not even enough space for everyone. Also not to mention a play ground teacher who is completely indescribable but we still keep her employed. She thinks that it is ok to play a game of solitaire with 3 classes (about 50) of students.
Lets get real people we are education are FUTURE and I think we should focus on that!!! "

Disgusted wrote on Aug 23, 2008 8:38 PM:

" I know for a fact that Marty Hall applied for the head job not the assistant. Why would he even consider being an assistant Jr. High coach after assisting a team to a state championship team last year. I also heard the lady they hired didn't even want the head job and had never coached before. If he applied for the head job and was given the assistant job why was he not confronted about that before it went to the board? How can they keep getting by with treating these guys so poorly. I think even after the fantastic results that the girls basketball team had last year that they are still mad that number one the coop went through, and number two that the girls were successful. They are still pouting because they didn't get their way. If these people are using their titles to get things they want then shame on them. They shouldn't be in the positions that they are in as they are not putting the kids needs before there own selfish wants. It's really pathetic to think that these people are dictating the educations and coaches that the kids have. Who are the adults here? How much longer can they continually get by with the crap they are pulling. "
