Vera L. McGirl

Published: Monday, August 25, 2008 1:55 PM CDT
June 20, 1931 - Aug. 22, 2008

ELDON, Mo. - Vera L. McGirl, 77, of Eldon, Mo., formerly of Kahoka, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, in the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Versailles, Mo.

She was born on June 20, 1931, in Luray, Mo., the daughter of Leslie R. and Stella Faye Weller Sawyer.

She married John McGirl on Jan. 18, 1958, in St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka. He survives.

Additional survivors include: two daughters, Joyce A. Bass of Wyaconda, Mo., and Teresa K. Sutherland and her husband, Dr. Charles Sutherland, of Moberly, Mo.; a son, Marty R. McGirl and his wife, Colleen, of Eldon; nine grandchildren, Walter Morris of Bloomfield, Faron Morris and his wife, Jennifer, of Clarksburg, Mo., Ian Sutherland of Columbia, Mo., Tyler Sutherland of Moberly, Logan Sutherland of Columbia, Shelby Sutherland of Moberly, Kyle McGirl of Eldon, Caitlin McGirl of Eldon, and Kellie Homan and her husband, Andy, of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Gerald E. Sawyer and his wife, Judy, of Kahoka; four sisters, Virginia Johnson of Kahoka, Delores Shannon of Canton, Mo., Darlean Mohr of Canton and LaNora Davis of Bartlette, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Betty Sawyer of Kahoka; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother and father in-law, Earl and Emma McGirl; a granddaughter, Danita Morris; a brother, G. Dean Sawyer; a sister, Judy A. Monych; and two half brothers, Bobby Sawyer and Delbert Weller.

She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka.

Vera and John lived in Kahoka and raised their children there before moving to Eldon. Vera worked out of the home some of her years, but the job she loved and took most serious was being a good wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother.

Whatever her family needed, Vera was always there to lend a helping hand as long as her health permitted. No one could make a cobbler like Vera. She was the best.

She took great pride in her home and made it a happy home where family and friends always were welcome. She loved getting together with her brothers and sisters, especially during the holidays when they would spend several days making homemade cookies and candies and Christmas wreaths. They also enjoyed all-day shopping trips together and homemade ice cream on the Fourth of July. Vera enjoyed volunteering at the nursing home and Senior Center and enjoyed sewing and embroidery.

There is sorrow in our hearts today, but Vera would want us to remember all the good times we have shared and not feel sadness. She lived her life to reach this final destination and now she is home. She was loved deeply by her husband and all who knew her and she will be sadly missed.

Services were held this morning at Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, with Pastor Orlie Yoder officiating.

Burial was in the Kahoka Cemetery.

Visitation was held Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospices of America.

On-line condolences may be sent to the family at www.vigenmemorialhome.com.
