Hamilton High School's partnership with Keokuk Steel Castings and S.J. Smith will continue.
Welding classes, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, began this week for six weeks. The class starts in Hamilton's industrial classroom and finishes up at Steel Castings.
Hamilton had five students, Josh Bullard, Mariah Bullard, Kyle Sherburne, Tim Terford and Daniel Leroy, learn welding last year in partnership with S.J. Smith and Keokuk Steel Castings, a part of Matrix Metals, LLC.
“Hamilton High School made the July issue of ‘Matrix,' a publication of the Sanmar Group,” Principal Ron Gilbert said at the Sept. 17 school board meeting. “There's a story and photos of our kids welding at Steel Castings.
“Matrix is recognized on a global platform for its vocational training. This magazine gives Hamilton some worldwide recognition.”
The article in “Matrix” is on a page entitled “Stakeholder Engagement.”
The story is titled “Vocational Training at Keokuk” and says “five students, including a young girl” from Hamilton High School “let the sparks fly at the welding booths of Keokuk Steel Castings Company, Keokuk, Iowa.”
Gilbert was mentioned by name, as were Steel Castings employees Rob Crowley, Kevin Carr, Jeff Maxwell and Jed Soper, who volunteered to instruct the students.
The Web site www.sanmargroup.com/Newsmain/Matrix has back issues of the publication on-line. The latest edition on-line is April 2008. The July edition that includes the article about the Hamilton students is not yet available at the Web site.
