Vouchers needed for fall citywide cleanup
By Steve Dunn/Gate City Managing Editor
Keokuk residents will have the opportunity to take two free trips to the Lee County Transfer Station for two months, starting Wednesday.
Rather than having residents bring their refuse to the Keokuk municipal pool parking lot and loading the material into dumpsters, the city is asking residents to obtain two free vouchers at City Hall and to bring unwanted items to the Transfer Station at 111 Carbide Lane, Keokuk. The municipal pool parking lot is unavailable due to the construction of the new aquatic center.
The Transfer Station is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Residents must provide a voucher, a valid form of identification and a city water bill to put refuse in the Transfer Station. All loads must be secured and tarped.
The following items will be accepted: household and patio furniture, carpeting, flooring, mattresses, televisions, VCRs, bath and kitchen fixtures, small amounts of dimensional lumber, doors, frames, windows, fencing, wire, piping, swing sets, bicycles, lawn mowers with the gas and oil removed, brush and yard waste.
A maximum of four clean tires without rims will be accepted per household at no charge. No forklift or off-road tires will be accepted.
An appliance sticker must be bought and put on the appliance before it is brought to the Transfer Station. Appliance stickers costing $15 each are available at City Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Items that won't be accepted include batteries and other vehicle parts except tires, concrete, bricks, rubble, drywall, asphalt, shingles, asbestos material, siding, construction metals, antifreeze, paint, oil, gas, herbicides, pesticides and household chemicals.
