Palin and Biden exchange jabs in VP debate

Sen. Joe Biden described economics as the fundamental area of difference between his own Democratic ticket and that of his GOP rival, Gov. Sarah Palin.
Biden began by addressing the pending $700 billion financial bailout bill passed Wednesday by the U.S. Senate. He blamed Republicans in general, and presidential nominee John McCain in particular, for supporting the deregulation of the financial industry he said led to a crisis.
“We let Wall Street run wild,” Biden said. “John McCain thought the answer is that tried and true Republican response: deregulate, deregulate.”
Palin agreed, but blamed “corruption and greed” for problems that led to several recent forced mergers of large commercial and investment banks.
“It's not the American people's fault that the economy is like it is, but we've got the opportunity to learn a heck of a lot of good lessons and say, ‘never again will we be taken advantage of,'” Palin said.

Meanwhile, Palin noted that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama himself voted to give tax breaks to oil companies in 2005, “that I then had to turn around, as a governor of an energy-producing state, and kind of undo in my own area of expertise.”
Biden defended Obama's vote, because the bill included support for alternative energy. He said Obama voted against such tax breaks when the issue came up in a separate bill while McCain did not.
Energy policy came up again later, as the two discussed the importance of weaning the U.S. off foreign sources of oil.
“We're circulating about $700 billion a year into foreign countries, some who do not like America,” Palin said.
Palin echoed the slogan of “drill, baby, drill,” which she said she has heard at rallies across the country as people have called for tapping American oil and natural gas to replace foreign energy sources.
“You've said no to everything in trying to find a domestic solution to the energy crisis we're in,” Palin said to Biden. “You even called drilling - safe, environmentally-friendly drilling offshore - as raping the outer continental shelf.”
She described the Republican approach as an “all of the above” approach, as fossil fuel sources are combined with nuclear power and the use of technologically advanced methods intended to lower carbon emissions from burning coal.
Biden questioned McCain's commitment to alternative energy, given the Republican nominee's record of voting 20 times against government support for renewable fuels.
“Maybe he's for everything if it's not helped forward by the government,” Biden said. “Maybe he's for everything if the free market takes care of it. I don't know. But he voted 20 times against funding alternative energy sources.”
Neither candidate directly mentioned ethanol during the 90-minute debate, although Biden did once refer to “bio fuels.” There were also no direct references to agriculture or farming.
Both candidates discussed job creation, but neither talked directly about manufacturing even though problems caused by the loss of American factory jobs has been one of the central talking points of the Obama campaign.
Palin said that as Vice President she'd play an active role in the administration, particularly in reaching energy independence. She said the Constitution gives the vice president flexibility to take a more active role in government as a part of both the Executive and Legislative branches. Biden noted his “history of getting things done,” working to push the administration's agenda in Congress as well as advising the president on major decisions. He disagreed with the assertion that the Vice President was part of the legislature except in cases of tie votes, however, calling it a “bizarre notion” created by Dick Cheney as a way of obtaining more power for the Bush administration.
Both candidates appeared poised and well-prepared. Biden often smiled, nodded and winked at supporters in the hall while Palin was speaking, while Palin took notes and looked down at the podium while Biden spoke. Although she smiled through several critical statements made by Biden early in the debate, she more frequently frowned as Biden spoke in its later moments.
The debate audience filled the Washington University Field House, while the overflow crowd filled the nearby Edison Theater to standing room only. Before the debate, moderator Gwen Ifill cautioned those in the main venue - in which most of the 3,100 reporters covering the event were seated - not to cheer or applaud. But in the theater, filled mostly with students, there was no such prohibition. The audience laughed out loud at several of Palin's statements, while the students frequently applauded after statements made by Biden.
Students of both political parties sounded off during the debate.
Noah MacMillan, a visual communication sophomore from Takoma Park, Md., said Palin was articulate but sounded as though she was giving memorized responses without actually answering Ifill's questions.
“I worry that people aren't going to recognize she was just reciting GOP talking points,” he said.
Outside the Edison Theater, a group of students wearing College Republicans T-shirts said they were hoping for a better performance from Palin.
“I'm not sure she delivered,” said Joel Wood, a political science junior from Denver, Colo. “I was really hoping for something better.”
Meanwhile, Wood said Biden often seemed dismissive and condescending toward Palin, although not as much as he expected.
“He kind of toned down a lot of his responses,” he said.
McCain has said he wants to end mandates, tariffs, subsidies, and price supports for ethanol and soy-based diesel. The Republicans do see a place for ethanol and other biofuels, however, particularly when it comes to what his campaign calls “second-generation” sources such as cellulosic ethanol derived from switchgrass, corn stalks, and other inedible material. The Obama campaign wants a 10-year program of research and development that it claims will end petroleum imports from the Middle East and Venezuela.
Gov. Chet Culver, a Democrat, said earlier this week that McCain's lagging poll numbers in Iowa likely have something to do with the Republican ticket's lack of support for ethanol subsidies and hostility toward a new farm bill.
Provisions in the GOP platform calling for an end to ethanol subsidies and renewable fuel mandates are opposed by Sen. Charles Grassley and by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, both Republicans.
Iowa farmers produced 2.4 billion bushels of corn last year, which is more than 18 percent of the total U.S. output. According to the Iowa Corn Growers Association, 812 million bushels of that were turned into ethanol fuel. About 27 percent of Iowa's corn crop is used to produce ethanol.
Before the debate, groups representing a variety of viewpoints strolled the campus holding signs and handing out information. Members of one of these groups, Green Action, held wooden windmills and sought pledges from Washington University students to support clean energy through their choices at the ballot box.
Out of about 11,000 students, the group had obtained some 1,400 signed pledge cards by debate time Thursday. Peter Murrey, a Green Action member and an environmental studies and philosophy sophomore from Nashville, Tenn., said his group expects to get 2,500 such pledges by election day.
“And at the rate we're going, we're going to get it in no time,” Murrey said.
The group is participating in a national effort called Power Vote, which aims to get some 1 million signed pledges. Murrey said Power Vote has about 200,000 such pledges so far.

Both Parties have dropped the Ball wrote on Oct 17, 2008 2:29 PM:
-Barack Obama DOES have some shady connections that he dances around when people question him on it, if you want to be BS'ed by him in his silver tongue devil fashion than maybe you should get a brain of your own
-The Democratic Party HAS gone to the left of center in a big way.....I saw on the news yesterday in California where a 1st grade class got to take a field trip to see their lesbian teacher get married, funded by tax dollars, aren't people ashamed of this? What party is Gavin Newsome from again??
-The Democratic Party IS for massive entitlements which is totally not what this country should be about....I work very hard for my money and don't expect anyone to provide for my family but ME, Barack wants to spread the wealth a.k.a income redistribution, I would thank him to keep his hands out of my pockets and every other hard working American, people have to make their own way in this life, many Americans cannot afford to support other peoples children or other people that won't get jobs....as a result of these programs people feel "entitled" to other peoples money when they need to get off of their butts and get a job, even if it is just working at McDonalds, some people should realize that with a limited education there is only so much they can expect, determination and a will to succeed is what many of these folks lack.
-Socialized health care will be BS, health care will be rationed and there will be no innovation to drive further treatments and cures that may help peoples ailments, something needs to be done to make it affordable for everyone, but it does NOT need to be handed out
-ROFLcopter, I would like you to provide me with an explanation of how Socialism is a good policy, hey great if you like to work to pay other people's bills or better yet if you are someone that would benefit from a Socialist approach then you are entitled to your opinion, but nothing beats Capitalism, we never would have grown to be the country we are without it, we don't need a "nanny state" people need to get back to the Founding Fathers idea of government and apply it to a modern day environment, people that want to interpret the Constitution so loosely should not be allowed to do so
-ACORN, wow, what else needs to be said, one of our fundamental rights is under fire, the right to vote, and some Democratic Secretary of State won't put measures of prevention in place??? and the Supreme Court overturns a federal appeals courts decision to make her do so? What a F****** joke! I wonder why the Obama campaign cut them a check for $832,000?
-McCain while I respect him entirely for his brave service to our country needs to grow a set and show a little more fire, he recently said something to the effect "I would rather lose honorably, than win dishonorably" well then Mr. McCain maybe running for this job isn't for you, or politics in general.
-Chances are Sarah Palin in smarter than any of you that criticize her so you need to cut her some slack, its amazing how the left wing media doesn't hammer away at Democrats now isn't it?
-Forget the income tax we need the fair tax which would almost certainly do away with tax evasion and it would stop docking people on productivity, lets at least adopt a flat tax.....the fair tax would also allow America to get its hands on money not claimed as income....i.e. drug money....
-We also need to protect our borders, both parties have failed miserably on this, people may not like my viewpoint but this is AMERICA, if you want to come here it is a privilege, get in line and learn some English, lets not let our culture be diluted to the point where we are no longer our own culture but just a branch of a Hispanic culture....
In conclusion I am sure there will be some that argue with the points I have made and I agree some of it is opionion so that is your perogative, but our government DOES need to be smaller and grant us back our personal liberties, to me there are no good candidates running, I will also vote for the lesser of two evils John McCain/Sarah Palin, they are more transparent and scare me less, Barack talks a big game but there is no substance behind much of what he says, he also wants to spend almost $1 trillion more of our tax money. To me America would have been much better served by...and I hate to say it...Hillary on the Democratic side, and my preferred candidates would have been any one of the three Huckabee, Gingrich, or Romney....
Just my .02 on everything. "

Please think about what you said. Look at what Obama told a small business owner the other day. Something like "I don't want to punish you for your success, I just want others behind you to have a chance. Spread the wealth around a bit.
WHAT? If you're ANY small business owner, why would you want to vote for this guy? What would be the incentive of anyone to be successful, and make over 250K a yr. The American dream then stops at that amount.
For the small business owner at that income, how do you expand your business? That's not a lot of money when you think about it. This means he has to lay people off, and that may mean the entry level jobs. Obama's socialism, and NO socialism doesn't work, would absolutely kill small jobs.
Obama wants to make us all the same. Here's a news flash, we are not. "

I also like this argument that "you're taking money from people who earn it to give it to a bunch of lazy poor people." Newsflash: Most poor people aren't lazy, most rich people are hard-workers. Also, if you make more than $250,000/year you should realize that it's your patriotic duty to give more of your income to help less-fortunate citizens of this country. Guess what folks, give a little tax money now to prevent a higher crime rate later. More poor = more crime.
But go ahead and vote for the "maverick", I'm sure he and the "hockey mom" have the answers. "

I for one will not be marking a box for McCain or Obama, I don't like either candidate and I am tired of having to vote for someone I don't like or think would do a good job running this country. I haven't decided who to write in yet. But at the rate we are going I would rather have Charlie Brown running our country over the choices we have at this election.
Both of the presidential candidates thought this huge bailout plan was a good idea and needed to be done immediately. Since when is it a good idea to solve money problems by getting a loan for more money. And why do they think it's a good idea to loan them OUR money so they can loan OUR money to us and charge us interest on OUR money. I am tired of bailing out millionaires! No one will bail me out if I get myself in financial trouble, yet it seems to be okay that we bail out all these companies and their bigwigs that have countless degrees and get paid millions a year.
STAND UP AMERICA!! If you don't like the nominee selection write in your own. No, they probably will never win, however, it does tell the government that you don't approve of what they are doing or plan to do. "

Clinton and his folks have a history with Bin Laden. He was trained by the US, on Clinton's watch. They actually had warnings back in the 90's that 9/11 would happen. Nothing was done then. So we ended up a the nation's largest terrorist attack; which led to war in Afghanistand and Iraq.
Things don't happen overnight; so the 90's seemed great then, but we are paying for the 90's today. "

you may not like.Remember Obama is the most liberal member of the United States Senate.
He received a 100 percent Liberal Rating from the National Journal, making him the most left-wing Senator in Washington - more liberal than even Democratic senators like Ted Kennedy.
If you look at Obama's record, you will understand just how dangerous this man is.
He even has terrorist friends he won't denounce. One such man is William Ayers, a leader in the radical terrorist group the Weatherman Underground. The group bombed several government buildings, including the Pentagon, killing civilians and police officers.
In 2001, Ayers said he had no regrets for his actions and wished he could have done more.
The ties between Obama and Ayers are tight. Both served on two non profit boards and they worked closely together. Ayers even hosted a political event at his home for Obama.
Obama has acknowledged he is a friend of Ayers and defends his association by saying he, Obama, was only 8 years old at the time of the Pentagon bombing.
However, Obama has no explanation as to why he is still a friend of Ayers.
Obama has even been endorsed by radicals such as Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan.
No one can deny hearing about Obama's relationship with the America-hating Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
There should be little doubt that William Ayers and Louis Farrakhan and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright are rooting for Obama - because he is one of them.
In keeping with such friends, Obama has promised to meet with radical leaders like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad without "preconditions" even though Ahmadinejad has promised to "wipe Israel off the map" and "destroy" America .
Even radical Hamas terrorists have praised him.And then there are Obama's dangerous economic plans for America .
He wants to almost double the capital gains tax. He wants to strip the FICA tax cap off every worker making more than $97,500. He wants to increase the dividend tax. He wants to let the Bush tax cuts expire - giving almost every American family an automatic tax increase.
He has called for more than $800 billion in new spending programs.
He is so radical he even backed driver's licenses for illegal aliens - even though such a move would help future terrorists move freely in the United States .
He is the most pro-abortion candidate in the history of the country. In 2001, as a state legislator in Illinois , he opposed a bill to protect live born children - children actually born alive! He was the only Illinois senator to speak out against the bill.
He opposes gun rights. He has long history of trying to deny ordinary citizens access to guns.
He originally backed Washington D.C. 's total ban on private handguns - a ban that was overturned. The NRA rated him an "F" on gun positions and says he is one of the most dangerous anti-gun politicians in the nation.
Never forget that Obama is a Harvard educated elitist. To him we Americans are simply "bitter" and he has mocked us saying "[they] cling to their guns and their religion." "
