Keokuk receives $1.4 million FEMA grant
For the Daily Gate City
The City of Keokuk is one of four Iowa entities to receive part of $81.3 million in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency for Iowa.
The funding will be used to provide various repairs to flood damage in Keokuk, Cedar Rapids, Palo and at the University of Iowa sustained in June and July when several Iowa rivers, including the Mississippi River, overflowed their banks.
The award is a continuation of funding that will come to the state as the rebuilding process begins.
“The flood waters are long gone, but the remnants of this disaster remain,” said U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin. ”You can see them on the basement walls of buildings throughout the state, in the power facilities whose operations have been damaged and throughout the U of I campus. The continued funding coming into our state demonstrates that day by day we increase the resources that will help put this disaster behind us.”
Specific project funding includes:
Keokuk - $1,462,535, storm water pumps. Funding will be used for estimated damages to three storm water pumps and their associated electrical controls and motors, which were inundated by floodwaters causing the pumps to overheat and burn up.

Funding will be used for estimated repair costs to the Station's ventilation, seal water, air supply and lighting systems, submersible pumps, sump pumps, bridge crane/monorail, valving, instrumentation controls and wiring, and electrical controls and wiring were submerged and rendered inoperable.
