Keokuk homecoming under way

Keokuk High School is celebrating homecoming this week with the Disney theme, “Dreams Do come True.”

Students and staff are encouraged to dress in a different theme each day this week. Monday was Game Plan Day. Today is Princess/Villain's Day. Wednesday is Dress As a Favorite Disney Character Day. Thursday is Purple and White School Colors Day and Friday is Cinderella's Grand Ball Day - or Dress-up Day.

The annual high school Festival Day is from 11:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Thursday in Wright Fieldhouse and on the south side of the fieldhouse.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The Keokuk Police Department will grill hamburgers and the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company is providing soda.

Students will work on floats, hold class competitions in volleyball, tug of war and powder puff football. Near the end of the festival, door prizes will be given away.


The homecoming parade begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at Fourth and Main streets. The parade proceeds up Main to 17th Street. It turns on 17th to High Street, turns up High and ends at Calvert Stadium.

The band will feature the KHS Marching Chiefs Band, the Little Feathers, class floats, homecoming court attendants, homecoming king and queen candidates, the secretaries' float, the Football Boosters' float, KHS cheerleaders and football team.

Alumni groups are invited to participate and may call the KHS Activities Office to make arrangements.

KHS language teacher Gretchen Kirchner was elected by the student council as Homecoming Parade grand marshal.

The pep rally begins at Calvert Stadium Thursday with the arrival of the parade participants. Sponsored by the Football Boosters, it will feature all fall sports participants and the crowning of the 2008 homecoming king and queen.

Queen candidates are seniors Nicole Kelly, Molly McDonald, Lindsay Nash and Katie Schulte. King candidates are seniors Josh Beaird, Drew O'Bleness, Chris Hopkins and Tommy Stolley.

Junior attendant is Jessica McClain. Junior escort is Elijah Seay. Sophomore attendant is Emilie Elder. Sophomore escort is Christian Sestito. Freshman attendant is Mollie Martin. Freshman escort is Derek Rose.

Winners of the float contest and the class competitions from earlier in the day at the festival will be announced at the pep rally.

KHS classes will compete against one another in the yell contest.

On Friday, KHS will face Fort Madison on the gridiron. The freshmen game begins at 5 p.m. and the varsity game follows, beginning around 7:30 p.m.

Half-time entertainment will be provided by the marching band, flag corps and Little Feathers. The highlight of half-time is the presentation of the homecoming queen and her court.

Lee County Pork Producers will grill pork sandwiches for the homecoming game, sold through the concession stand. Funnel cakes also will be sold at a stand near concessions.

The homecoming dance is from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the high school, featuring Premier Sound & Light Show. The dance is for KHS students and their registered dates. Cost is $3 per person.
