Kiwanis Club installs four officers

Four Keokuk Kiwanis Club officers were sworn in by the lieutenant governor of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Monday.
The new officers are President Jim Merritt, Vice President Jay Vest and Secretary Sue Pankey. Mike O'Connor retains his position as treasurer.
Lt. Gov. Deb Pflasterer, a member of the Carthage, Ill., Kiwanis Club, installed the four officers.
Outgoing club President John Martin said the club needs to work on increasing its membership in 2008-09. The new Kiwanis year started Oct. 1. Martin said the club also needs to have more projects so the community can see Kiwanis members in action. Last month, the club sponsored a Child Safety Faire at Keokuk High School in which bicycle helmets and reconditioned bicycles were given away.
Two of the club's annual fund-raising projects are peanut sales around Labor Day and the sale of Christmas greenery during the holidays. Proceeds from the club's fund-raising go toward helping the youth of the community in line with the Kiwanis pledge, which says in part, “May we, as true Kiwanians, exemplify these virtues (purity, valor and justice) as we serve the children of the world.”
Club members will start taking orders for Christmas greenery soon.
Other club members are Steve Dunn, Dan Krueger, Wayne Nelson, Julie O'Connor, Ryan Ruffcorn, Jay Vest and Art Wirtz.
The club meets at noon on Monday at the Hawkeye Restaurant in Keokuk. Kiwanis has about 260,000 adult members worldwide.
